We had the good fortune of connecting with Tekesia (Doctor TK) Jackson-Rudd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tekesia (Doctor TK), what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a Clinical Psychologist, I was taught the fundamental strategies to become a great therapist. After attending graduate school, I realized the desire to have a private practice. I successfully opened an individual and group practice From Ground Zero, and my businesses have been very successful. However, I began to recognize the need for the mental health industry to have leaders available to mentor and teach other therapists how to have a successful business. Therapists are not taught how to become business owners in graduate school. They are taught how to become an employee. My goal was to initially employ therapists in my group practice and show them what is possible with having a flexible schedule and a supervisor that cared about their overall well-being. During my group practice season, I began to receive inquiries from therapists to teach them how to open up their private practice. I started coaching therapists over five years ago, but I did not advertise my services. As I grew in my coaching business, I decided to make it public. Over the last few years, my mission has been to motivate and teach mental health therapists how to have a profitable practice, make a significant impact in their communities, and walk-in alignment with their purpose. The coaching programs that I offer mental health therapist to grow and scale their business serves over 30 states.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over the last nine years, I have successfully opened a solo and group practice in Southern California. I currently serve adults that are maneuvering through life transitions. Beyond mental health services, I also facilitate training in the community and collaborate with churches and nonprofits to destigmatize mental health. I am a huge advocate of psychoeducation and breaking the barrier within the marginalized populations seeking mental health services. I grew up in Compton, California, and I always desire to get back to my community. Despite exposure to community violence and a lack of positive leaders in my community, I became very resilient in my academic and professional career. My goal has always been to re-create a new cycle of individuals that can represent communities like Compton. Over the last ten years in my business, I have grown significantly. My growth includes but is not limited to spiritually and mentally. It has not been easy as a black woman with a doctorate, as I have often had to “prove” my status so that others would take my profession seriously. Nevertheless, my mission with serving a mental health therapist across the country is to help them build a wealth mindset, profitable business, And deliver effective services to the community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I deem self-care as a good time. I would schedule a full spa day for my friend and me to receive facials and massages. We will also eat lunch at the Day spa and catch up. One of my best friends is a therapist. Therefore we recognize that it is good sometimes to “do nothing.” After the day spa, we would return to the five-star hotel and enjoy the Amenities. On the following day, I would love to get some vitamin D, sunshine and go shopping outside. That’s my version of a good time, considering the majority of our time is spent helping others maneuver through problems and chaos. Therapists are only as good as they treat themselves.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
