We had the good fortune of connecting with Terèsa Biter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terèsa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’m not sure I had a choice. Long ago, I thought I wanted to be a nurse and I was going to try to focus energy on that but something just kept pulling me away and it didn’t bring me happiness. I had one little opportunity. A slight window and I packed up my car and came to LA not knowing what the future was going to hold. I just knew that it was going to be something I needed for my soul.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a chief operations officer for a Women’s clothing brand called BABES. I handle everything from ordering to customer emails to even designing. There is nothing there that isn’t my job. The easiest way to keep everything organized is to make sure your hands are in everything. I bring to the table every bit of myself to lend to the success of that business.
For a long time, I didn’t think I was that special or that there was anything that sent me apart. I’ve come to realize that one thing that does make me stick out is my commitment to whatever it is I’m doing. I strive to be the best at whatever I’m doing. That does come with some stress because you’re toggling between your perfectionism and allowing yourself to just do. I have been in many fields since I moved to LA; the entertainment industry (acting and costume/wardrobe), events, dabbling in photography which lead me to fashion. To be honest, some days I look at it and think to myself how the hell did I even get here. It really just started with me sending a girl who had a brand a message and asking her could I take photos and just learn more about that part. That was eight years ago. The road from St. Louis me to LA me wasn’t easy. I had a rough childhood and I come from a mother who was mentally ill and used drugs to cope with her struggles. I spent most of my early life, caring for her and my siblings, and I think when I stepped out on my own, I didn’t really know who I was meant to be without that caretaking part. That caused me to go down other paths just trying to find myself and express myself. A lot of bad choices were made. Put myself in a lot of bad situations. LA presented a new canvas for me to just be. If I can have one person take one thing away from my story, it would be that you don’t have to just accept what life is giving you. I thank God every day that I was able to get myself out of some situations that I put myself in. I put myself in those situations because I didn’t think that I had a choice. I didn’t think that I could be different than what it looked like the world was laying out for me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is literally a jungle gym for the brain! We’re definitely taking a hike or two. But not to Runyon! I’m sorry to you Runyon hikers it is a little to bougie for me. I’m more of a Fryman girl! We’re definitely catching some live music. Love Supreme Wednesdays at Zaya DTLA and Lower Deck Sessions in Encino are two of my favs! Must catch a brunch! Anywhere! We have to have some of the best brunches! Food- I love The Vegan Joint in DTLA, gluten-free pizza at Ove Pizzeria in studio city, and I love me some wings from Over/Under in Burbank. Also, if you see a food truck and you think you want to eat there stop. Eat there! Must get fruit from the fruit cart- a must and Top-tier. There’s literally a class for anything. We could make rugs, we could make pots-I love a workshop. Definitely have to rent a bike and ride from Santa Monica down to Marina del Rey and back. Not only are you getting some beach time but you just see the most interesting things and people. Depends on who’s coming to visit me, but I’m definitely down to do some Thrifting. Thrifting is literally one of my favorite things about LA. You could just find anything anywhere. And if you’re wondering if I would drive over an hour (or more) to go to the thrift store, that a person told me about- I would
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Man that is hard. I wouldn’t be here without the helping hands of others. But my oldest and top two people who have supported me the most in my life would be Debbie Compton and Elsa Smith. These two women have been a strong hold in my life and have been a forever rock. They’ve held me up and wiped my tears.
