We had the good fortune of connecting with Romain Lecat and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Romain, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been passionate about good food, and after moving to Los Angeles I was really missing the great tasting bread made from high quality ingredients that I had grown up with in France. It seemed like most of the options in the area were made with refined flour, mass produced, and nutrient deficient. This was not at all what I would have expected here in LA, in the capital of healthy lifestyles! This inspired me to look back to my roots in Paris. I teamed up with my brother Alex and together we studied at the École de boulangerie et de pâtisserie de Paris to learn classic French baking techniques and how to work with the best French ingredients. Now with Sweat Wheat Bakery we are proud to offer Angelinos real French bread and pastries made exclusively with the finest French flour.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sweet Wheat is a family baking business run by myself and my brother Alex. I am most proud of how we’ve remained true to our French roots and refused to cut any corners at the expense of authenticity. We stand apart from the rest precisely because our products are made with 100% French flour. We specialize in bread making with baguettes that taste like the real deal because we only use unbleached flour from the fields of France that is certified non-GMO and free from additives and enzymes. We make our bread levain in-house and our traditional French method takes several weeks to create because we want the active starter to have a long, slow fermentation process. This ensures a complex bread flavor that is proven to be better for digestion and supports a healthier gut microbiome. We also offer a selection of viennoiserie and pastries that has been purposefully crafted to make your experience the same as if you were walking into your neighborhood bakery in Paris. We’re proud of the quality and taste of our products and know that we’ve made our grands-parents proud too!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’ve had several friends from France visit us in Los Angeles for the first time and they’re always pleased with our “classic Hollywood day” recommendation. We’ll start with an urban hike – a new concept for French visitors – at Runyon Canyon where the people watching is the real treat. Then we’ll grab quick bites at the Mama Shelter rooftop for distant views of the Hollywood sign and then proceed to Lake Hollywood Park for a closer look. Griffith is the next stop and one of my favorite destinations in LA. Lastly, we’ll take a ride through Mulholland Drive as the sun sets, stop at an overlook and enjoy their very first In-N-Out burger we grabbed from a drive thru. It’s a pretty stereotypical day, but it really pleases the French tourist!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many folks deserve to be acknowledged for helping Sweet Wheat come to fruition. I’ll start with my family for believing in my wildest entrepreneurial dreams and for the constant support and encouragement. I also have several mentors in France to thank for their culinary insights and lessons. I’ve been fortunate to work under some top French chefs who inspire my work today and continue to push my skills further. Most of all, I have to thank my younger brother for starting this crazy endeavor with me and for choosing to work by my side every day.
