We had the good fortune of connecting with Roya Adjory and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My family and I have owned and operated a hair salon close to 35 years at the same location in Encino . Meanwhile our collective health were declining and we were experiencing variety of illnesses . At some point in year 2004 I began a journey towards finding out why this was happening which has led me to this point and to the business I own and operate now . I founded the very first certified Green hair salon in 2005 and became certified by the city of Los Angeles in 2006 and went on receiving a climate leader award from CoolCalifornia for my efforts in creating a green , clean and sustainable space using only non toxic and biodegradable and earth friendly products for our services . Our salon became a sought after place to come to for those Angelinos looking for healthier option . My quest for a healthier practice and services have led me believe and it is confirmed by the state of California that some of these chemicals in personal care products specially ones used at hair salons have been found to be carcinogenic , mutagenic and neurotoxins and yet no governing body to regulate these chemicals and no agencies looking out for our health . I was constantly searching for cleaner products that also performed well . This inquiry led me to a product line from Denmark that caught my attention . Sure enough after using it for awhile on our clientele , I was convinced of its quality and company’s high Ethos that goes above and beyond the current EU standards . I already knew this was the best it can get in the world of professional permanent hair colors that was way safer than most I had been testing and the value it offered to any hair salon and stylists that were health conscious and wanted the cleaner hair colors on their clients who wished for the same . Having owned a green hair salon and have seen all the positive changes in our lives also ignited my interest in participating in lobbying for legislations that will control the toxic substances that have been impacting our lives for too long . So to answer your question I have to say the two compelling ideas that got me into the business I am in now is 1. Most salons , stylists and the public are not aware of the kind of products and practices that can change their lives for better 2. Having access to hair salons and stylists allowed me to communicate the information and knowledge I had gained for the last 17 years of being a green business . I became very clear about the role I needed to play therefore I began distributing these products to other professionals and educating them on everything I have learned on a better path to health and beauty.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My current business of the last 5 years has been importing and distributing natural based and certified organic hair care products from Denmark . What sets us apart from any other companies is the nature of these products and their functionality . Also we are the only company of such that is committed to educating the stylists and the consumers about variety of concerned chemicals that has advertise effect on all of us . Having created the very first green hair salon and tested out many product lines that has the least impact on our health and the health of our planet , puts us in a leadership position to also inform and educate the salon owners in creating a safe and non toxic space to work at and to provide services . I am most proud of being the only salon in the last 10 years of receiving a Climate Leader Award from www.CoolCalifornia.com www.norisecosalon.com Also most proud of is being an active participant in lobbying along with women’s voices for the earth , breast cancer prevention partners , black women for wellness , in Sacramento to help change the laws for safer personal care and beauty products in California . I got where I am today not only by the Grace of something bigger than me but also deeply believing in what needed to happen even though at the time , there was no green salon businesses as a model or no standards to go by . Finding sustainable materials was hard and expensive 17 years ago but I overcame the challenges by sheer persistence and honoring the fire in my belly and a deep knowing that I was the one I was waiting for in creating such a business . The lesson I learned along the way is that for any new idea to manifest one must be unstoppable. Honoring the calling and staying true to the original vision is what will generate strength to move through whatever that comes up to persuade you otherwise . I learned that nothing is more important than ones health and well-being . I like the world to know we all have the power to change what we have control of and eating healthy , using clean and green products and staying positive and hopeful are some of those things we have control of . We also have buying power and with our Conscious spending we can communicate to the corporations and companies that we must have products that do not damage our children , us and cause so much destruction on our one and only planet . We must demand that and stop buying products from companies that do not show any commitment to the environment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Southern California has the most diverse scenes to encounter . I happen to be very biased about my own little town of Topanga nestled 1000 feet up within the large body of the Topanga canyon state park . So many places to hike and to take in all the natural beauties . Up here you can find few great restaurants , The Inn of the Seventh Ray is on such a place , charming little shops and a great thrift store to get lost in . All the beaches and towns along the way are stunning and one can just spend a entire day in one of them . We are also lucky to have so many museums and galleries to encounter . There is always lots of excitement and interesting people that are on the board walk in Venice and ebbed Kenny which if I had a guest I will take for people watching and fun shops.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to say it is Natulique. In all my career I have never worked for anyone else. Around 5 years ago Natulique and I formed a partnership in distributing their products in California . I had nothing to compare the relationship with but I am to this day amazed and in awe of their level of care and support . I wholeheartedly believe what I have been able to accomplish is due to my efforts, commitment and intentions but also great deal of giving on the part of this remarkable company . I am in 100% alignment with their ethos 360BioCert as well as the quality of their products .
