We had the good fortune of connecting with The Black Writer’s Collective and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi The Black Writer’s, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The Black Writers Collective started as a writer’s group seeking to showcase the talents and voices of underrepresented people of color. We then were inspired to collaborate together and create stories that are overlooked by mainstream media. Our ultimate goal is to help other creatives of color bring their stories to life, following in the footsteps of those who paved the way before us, like Shonda Rhimes. Knowing that stories change the world, we wanted to tell stories that would enrich our communities’ experiences. We aspire to change the face of media, allowing Black and Brown people to see themselves in the fullness of who they are.

There is a thirst for content that centers on Black people and POC, and a lack of Afro-futurist or sci-fi projects that are produced by high caliber writing and production teams. In our endeavor to fill those voids, we recognize that there is no advancement without risks. Seeing the risks taken by people like Nichelle Nichols, Michael Jackson, and Eddie Murphy, as they transformed the landscape of what was possible for us to achieve, and of what was even possible for us to dream of, we were inspired to stretch and take the bold risk to produce our own media instead of waiting to “be discovered” or joining established companies.

As members of society, it is important to walk in good faith, to be honest with oneself and others. Integrity is what upholds communities and what ultimately guides the Black Writer’s Collective. This integrity, paired with goodwill, drives our process and our creative projects are imbued with it, including our most recent project: a web series, STONE FATE, in which the protagonists battle with the corrupt powers that be, fighting for egalitarian values and genuine freedom for all.

The end goal for The Black Writer’s Collective is to be known as a company that provides several services within the entertainment industry from education to consulting to casting, and to production.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our current project is STONE FATE – a genre-bending, sci-fi thriller that explores a world where the founders’ dark secrets can be the demise of all. We are excited about the reception and excitement it creates when people learn about or interact with it. After I successful professional table read, we launched our crowdfunding campaign where we reached 102% of our goal. Because we have the support of our loyal family, fiends, and “fans”, we are now in the pre-production phase of our project. During this time, we have found that most people we’ve interviewed for crew and cast positions are so enthralled and supportive that they are willing to join our production for no to low pay, This speaks to the strength of our script, the characters, and the world we have created.

It hasn’t been easy nor are we at the finish line, but what we have learned is to always put the project first. If we are serving the project, there is no way we can go wrong. We’ve also learned that “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. Many people and things can act as a pitfall or obstruction, but if the desire to succeed is there, you can push past any and all obstacles. It’s also important to show up for the hard work every day. It doesn’t require many hands, it just requires willing and consistent hands to get the job done. Once you find it within yourself in a few select people, it’s possible to accomplish anything.

We want the world to know that STONE FATE and The Black Writer’s Collective was created for the people, by the people. We only win if we are helping others, bringing other people along on the journey, assisting others in creating something beautiful, and always making sure to create and serve with excellence.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take my best friend on a little hike at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook (ask The Culver City Stairs), head home to shower, then have lunch at The Penthouse in Santa Monica. If there’s time, we’d do a little shopping at the 3rd Street Promenade. Next we’d head to LACMA, The Broad, and a short visit to the Downtown Art Walk. Our day would end with a relaxing dinner at Castaway in Burbank before ending the night with a walk at Manhattan Beach’s pier.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our families and crowdfund supporters are who keeps us striving for our goals! We all have such powerful, loving support from our parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and supporters. It takes a village and these people are central to our success.
