We had the good fortune of connecting with The BLK LT$ pka Andreena Mill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi The BLK LT$, how do you think about risk?
I believe as a creative it is imperative to your career to take risks. Risks with your artistic direction, risks with your message, even down to taking a risk and leaving your hometown to see what the world can offer. Do whatever you need to do to stay true to yourself because not taking a risks might end up stunting your growth and you may never see what you are truly capable of. In 2018 I moved to Los Angeles alone with no family and as a native of Toronto Canada it was a very hard thing to do, but since arriving here I have met and worked with some of the people I have dreamt of working with. I finally launched my company Black Lotus Media Group and also expanded artistically when I found a mentor who took a chance on me. The risk of failure was high but the reward so far has been amazing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started doing music professionally at the age of 12 and being nominated for Juno (Canadian Grammy) by the age of 13. Music has always been in my blood my father is a musician so he really encouraged me to do what I love to do him and my mother and gave me the resources I needed to sharpen my skills. I started taking piano lessons at the age of 9 and also started writing songs. Being in the industry so young there were definitely a few hurtles one being a Canadian the Rnb music industry took a very long time to grow so it was difficult trying to be heard in my hometown of Toronto it wasn’t until I connected with Boi 1da and Drake as well as Saukrates an amazing producer from Toronto that helped me find my sound, which let universal music publishing group to find me and I have been writing and producing with the company ever since. Over the years I have worked with some of the industries best like Drake, 40, Future, DMX, Boi1da, ect. Being a female Songwriter and Producer there aren’t many like me in the forefront but there are a lot of us so I continue to work and represent the ladies who tend to be the unsung heroes in this industry. I am very excited to be the CEO of my own label Black Lotus Media Group where I am now artistically developing artists from the United States and Canada. I am able to apply the knowledge I have learned over the years and share it with a new generation of musicians and creatives. Staying true to who I am as an artist allowed me to overcome the obstacles that I was faced sometimes I was walking through the wrong door not realizing there was a better situation waiting for me The BLK LT$ in my true form and not what someone else told me I should be what I should sing and or wear. If there is anything I would want the world to know about my brand in my story is that you can accomplish anything you want as long as you keep going keep taking risks and connect with like minded peers who see your vision.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Staying at The Line hotel Is a must their breakfast lunch and dinner menus are amazing so I would totally encourage my best friend to stay there. I am a huge fan of food trucks and Mexican food and LA has so many great places. LJ’s taco truck and taco zone in Echo Park would definitely be a great spot to hit up in the evening. Pez Cantina in downtown LA also has amazing food and a great environment so I would definitely bring them there. I love working out so Runyon Canyon would be a must even though I know the first time is always the hardest. And of course Santa Monica pier Venice Beach are all places I would love to bring my best friend to to show them a great time from sun up to sundown to really soak in some Cali life. I love nature and the beauty of California so a trip to Joshua Tree would also be a must however it’s outside of LA so if me and my BFF were planning on doing something exciting inside the city I would love to bring her to Universal Studios theme park that place makes me feel like a kid every single time I love it! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out FACTOR Canada they are an organization that continue to propel musicians coming out of Canada. They help fund projects like albums, videos and more and continue to do a great job supporting Canadian musicians around the world.
