We had the good fortune of connecting with The Rat Utopia Experiment and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi The Rat, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
The ability to create brings us fulfillment and we hope it will bring the same fulfillment to others, through our shows and recordings. Music is an outlet for our ideas. When we get on stage, we feel more like ourselves. We all agree that we use it as an escape from our daily lives.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets us apart from others is our musical versatility–our songs can flow well from soft to aggressive within the same set, but we also have to mention our age. Being mostly under 18 and gaining more traction compared to most of the bands around us, who are typically around 20-30, has definitely set us apart but also comes with some challenges. It can be difficult to get people to take us seriously or even book shows. Still, we put all of our passion and determination into our stage presence to show people we are more than our age. Just because we’re kids doesn’t mean we aren’t good or that we don’t actually want to pursue music. We want people to see what we can do and give us a chance.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some good food spots are Tacobell on 6th Ave, Tortas Locas, and Red Robin Yum. Places to shop are High Voltage Records and Mission Thrift, also on 6th ave. Then some fun music venues are Real Art Tacoma and the Spanish Ballroom!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Regan Barger/Soda Cracker Jesus was our band mentor and helped us work on our songwriting, stage presence, and how to run our band. He led us to find our musical identity and guided us to the many opportunities that have gotten us to where we are now. Thanks Regan!!!
