We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tiffany, what matters most to you?
Integrity forms the foundation of trust, honesty, and ethical behavior. It means staying true to one’s values, being honest even when it’s difficult, and consistently adhering to moral and ethical principles. Integrity is vital in building strong relationships, whether personal or professional, as it establishes credibility and reliability. When someone demonstrates integrity, it fosters respect and creates a sense of dependability.

Treating others the way I would want to be treated is a principle that guides my interactions with people. It’s essentially practicing empathy and kindness, understanding that each person deserves respect, consideration, and compassion. By putting myself in someone else’s shoes, I strive to approach situations with fairness, empathy, and understanding. This principle not only contributes to creating a more harmonious and compassionate environment but also helps in nurturing meaningful and lasting relationships.

Both integrity and the golden rule of treating others with respect and empathy are interconnected, forming a core part of how I navigate through life. These values shape my decisions, interactions, and how I aim to contribute positively to the world around me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a first-generation immigrant growing up, I lacked guidance through the challenges I encountered when my family moved to America at 13. My understanding was simple—I had to work exceptionally hard, navigating this journey alone, setting my own objectives and destinations. Coming of age in a foreign country was tough, particularly learning a new language as a teenager; it presented quite a struggle. I had to figure everything out independently, teaching myself how to adapt and thrive in an entirely unfamiliar environment.

After graduating from the University of Santa Cruz, success became my only option. My family preferred I pursue graduate school, but without means to take on more student loans, I forged my path in the real world. That’s when I secured an internship at a San Francisco visual effects company in 2003, primarily because they assumed I had a car and could start immediately. Starting as a production assistant, I juggled various office tasks, from running errands for meals and coffee to managing FedEx deliveries. Always the first in and the last out, I maintained a constant smile, ever prepared to tackle challenges and build from the ground up. Much like my early days in America, where I struggled initially but persevered, I mirrored that resilience in my professional journey, navigating uncharted territory to build a career in this field.

Recognizing my drive and enthusiasm, the company offered me a full-time position. Within six years, I progressed from a production assistant to a production manager. Looking back, in 2023, I celebrated 20 years in my film business career. One crucial lesson I’ve learned is that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed—people recognize it; a positive attitude is appreciated by everyone; and proficiency in your job spreads quickly by word of mouth—everyone acknowledges it.

It’s never too late to pursue your dream and transform it into a reality. Despite not having the means in the past, the pandemic became a turning point for me. I made the decision in 2022 to finally pursue what I’ve always aspired to do but never had the courage for—to become a filmmaker. Presently, I’m attending the American Film Institute as a producing fellow. The journey to fulfill one’s dreams might have obstacles, but the satisfaction of reaching for them and making them a reality is immeasurable.

I aspire to blend my expertise in visual effects with the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired at the AFI. Through this combination, I am hoping to make a significant and impactful contribution to the world of cinema.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I believe going on a hike to the Hollywood sign would be a fantastic experience, mixing a bit of hiking with the magical feeling of being in the Hollywood area. Additionally, booking a night at the Hollywood Bowl or the Magic Castle seems like an exciting way to explore the area. The Getty Museum is also definitely worth a visit. When it comes to food, Park’s Korean BBQ is always a great spot to consider.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My grandmother has been my mentor, raising me and imparting all the essential lessons I needed to become a decent, compassionate human being. She instilled in me the values of generosity and kindness towards others. More importantly, she emphasized the importance of integrity—urging me to keep my promises and consistently do my best, irrespective of my position in any hierarchy.
