We had the good fortune of connecting with Martin Hector Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Martin Hector, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a young kid, I always found happiness in drawing. At the time it was just pokemon and animals but I loved the idea of being able to create something out of nothing. There was always a great sense of accomplishment when I would finish a drawing. During my school years, I was an ok student but where I excelled the most were in the art projects. I was always able to be passionate about those projects because I was free to dream and explore my creativity.
After high school, I prepared my portfolio and decided to become an Industrial Designer. I liked that these designers could range from hard goods, soft goods, and other products. In college I always pushed myself to create something that never existed, designing products that could improve someone’s life. I fell in love with innovation, being able to understand the problem people were having and solving them with design. I enjoyed the fact that I could take matters into my own hands and create a better future. It was then that I realized that I want to create products that push our society to be better.
As creators, we have the ability to turn our dreams into reality. Our only limitation is our imagination. I am excited to dream big and believe that anything is possible.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a product designer that has a focus in footwear design. I have worked with many companies such as Nike, Uber Eats, and MGM. I have created a lot of different products and I take a lot of pride in the fact that I know that most of my products are one of a kind and nothing similar exists in the world. It has been a long journey and is something that never stops it just keeps evolving over time. It was definitely not easy, there have been many times that I wanted to quit and pursue something else. The hardest part about being a designer is that everyone will always have an opinion of your work, they will never see your vision until it is actually real. There will always be people that don’t believe in you or make fun of you but you should never give up.
The most important thing is to believe in yourself. Trust your gut feeling even though if you might be wrong, over time you will learn and you will be successful. Anyone can do it, it just takes dedication and passion. Always shoot for the stars and hope for the best. Take every challenge one at a time and keep moving forward. You only fail when you stop trying.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the outdoors, there is something that is so soothing when you are in nature and just breathing in the fresh air. I always take people to my favorite hike at Runyon Canyon. I take them through a tough route where at the end you are able to see the best view of all of Los Angeles.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people that have been part of my life that made me the person that I am today. From classmates to teachers I want to thank everyone that I have met in my journey that has made me a better person. But one person, in particular, would be Dwayne Edwards. He was the first mentor that I had that truly inspired me to become the designer that I am. I admired how he inspired so many people through his work. His story of being one of the first few black Jordan designers and coming from nothing made me realize that anything is possible.
