We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Yang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our family was about to shut down the family business when Sean, Stacey, and I started thinking about possibly taking it over. Mochi Ice cream was really having a moment and we felt like we had a really good product from our family recipes that we wanted to share with the world. Sean had experience in finance and ops, I’ve worked in strategy and marketing, and with Stacey’s experience in food and law, we thought we made a great team. We quit our corporate jobs and started working on Sweety and launching our mochi ice cream.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sometimes, the failures teach you more than the successes. We launched Sweety during the pandemic and have had challenge after challenge thrown at us between supply chain disruptions, inflation, and trying to scale a business under the most tenuous circumstances. In some ways, because this environment is all we’ve ever known, the successes feel sweeter and more rewarding and we feel ready to take on just about anything!
Taking the leap of faith by launching Sweety was a huge risk – none of us had ever imagined that we would leave corporate jobs and become entrepreneurs. Betting on the success of Sweety was the largest risk that we had taken with our careers. Our family didn’t have many options as immigrants, so they had to work for themselves and build small businesses. We were very much taught that it was better to have safe corporate jobs with a good paycheck, so it was unexpected that we would choose to jump into entrepreneurship and revive the family business. We’re so happy that we took the risk and trusted each other that we could build Sweety together.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Community has been a huge part of our success. When we first started, Sweety was truly a “family business” with aunties, uncles, and cousins all getting together on the weekends to fill orders. And that still holds true today, as we are incredibly proud to be the only AAPI family-owned and operated mochi ice cream business in the US. We didn’t see other founders that looked like us, and saw a need that wasn’t being met and we created Sweety for ourselves, our family, our friends, and our community.
We’re also inspired by the younger generation of CPG entrepreneurs, they are unabashedly bold and innovative in their approach, embrace their cultural identities and build community authentically.
