We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Arce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jose, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Pursuing a creative career was something I always knew I wanted to do from a young age. I began dancing at the age of five. Growing up with a speech impediment, being creative helped me express myself and build confidence in ways I could not do with speech. I have warm memories of my childhood and watching my mom dance and enjoy music while cleaning. Many times I would join her and we would have a dance party anywhere in the house. Those experiences made me realize that I wanted to make others feel the joy I felt during those times. I was often told pursuing a creative career would not bring me success because it was considered a hobby. Still, nothing gave my life more meaning than expressing myself through music; it helped me escape from reality during life’s toughest challenges.

Once I started college, I decided to pursue a career in health care because I believed I needed a stable job to live a happy life. I became a certified nursing assistant and began working towards nursing school. In 2011, I got accepted into a nursing program, but I also had the chance to move to Los Angeles. It was a difficult decision, but I followed my heart and moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream. After working in health care for the last 14 years, I finally found the courage to follow my music industry dreams. Leaving my health care career of over ten years scared me because I constantly worried about failure, but I believe my intuition guided me to the path I was destined to walk. Today, I have no regrets and genuinely enjoy being a part of the creative community.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets GRL SND apart from other recording studios is its focus on female talent. Most studios aim to bring in as much business as possible, regardless of genre, talent, or sound. At GRL SND, we specifically cater to females who are seeking a safe environment to explore their creativity or realize a project they have conceived. I am incredibly proud of the GRL SND concept because, throughout my experience working in other studios, females have been given second priority to male artists or artists with the most money. At GRL SND, our main priority is ensuring the artist has the tools and resources they need to realize their vision. I’m proud that it took only nine months to build GRL SND fully.

In January 2021, my partner and I decided to develop a recording studio that caters to female talent. At first, we were excited to have an investor who was interested in working with us to realize our dream. Unfortunately, because of the uncertainties related to COVID-19, our investor elected not to move forward, which was a devastating blow to the development of GRL SND. Even so, we recognized that we have a meaningful brand that can bring a positive impact to the world, so we elected to continue developing the brand without the investor. From then on, developing the studio was quite challenging in so many ways: location, space, and budgeting, to name a few. We found an intimate space in a prime location and are very proud of the space that we have created for artists to feel comfortable in a space that can allow them to work free of distraction. The road to where we are today has not been easy, but it has provided us with many lessons for the future and we are excited and grateful for the path forward.

When the studio’s investor elected not to move forward, we decided to take matters into our own hands. Although entrepreneurship is stressful and challenging, we figured out how to make GRL SND a reality with what we had. Today, our fully functioning recording space is the perfect environment for the artists which we consider our niche group, females. It is safe, intimate, and has unique amenities and services that other studios do not offer, such as our Princess, Queen, and Iconic recording treatments. Challenges are a part of the creative process, and therefore shouldn’t be viewed in a negative light, but instead considered opportunities to learn.

The single most important lesson I have learned during GRL SND’s development is to always work with people you trust and the ones who have your best interest at heart. When you have something special, people often attempt to insert themselves in your idea in one form or another. The key is to trust your instincts and intuition, as well as remain loyal to those who have supported you throughout your development.

I want the world to know that the most crucial part about GRL SND is our focus on female artistry. We aim to create a lane within the music industry where females are empowered to stay true to themselves and become authentic, unique, and empowered artists and entrepreneurs.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to visit in Los Angeles is the Griffth Observatory and hiking trails. It is only ten minutes away from my recording studio, GRL SND. Not only is the Griffith Observatory an excellent hiking trail, but it has breathtaking views, especially during sunset. Afterward, the famous coffee shop, Maru, in Los Feliz is located in an excellent area to walk around and enjoy the different neighborhoods in the city. For lunch, a visit to L.A. wouldn’t be complete without a trip to In-N-Out Burger. Also, a trip to Hollywood would be incomplete without a visit to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Most L.A. visitors enjoy a visit to the Chinese Theater for a film and enjoy dinner at Katsuya Hollywood. California beaches are also stunning; I would encourage any visitor to make sure they have a chance to see the Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Malibu Beach, and Laguna Beach. Such places are perfect for acai bowls for lunch and seafood for dinner during a visit to the beach at sunset. Other great hiking trails include Runyon Canyon and Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook; they also have amazing views. Porto’s Bakery is ideal for fans of Cuban food and desserts. Also, I always recommend a trip to the Magic Castle in Hollywood for any out-of-town visitors. At the magic castle, visitors enjoy an evening of dinner and magic tricks by their talented staff. It sounds cliche, but it’s a fun experience, and the food is fantastic. Lastly, any visitors seeking to take in L.A.’s breathtaking views over dinner should dine at 71Above in downtown Los Angeles. The service, food, and views are all five-star!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My partner Eric has been my most tremendous supporter since day one. He’s the reason why I was able to attend Los Angeles Recording School because he knew the amount of passion I have for music. I am blessed to have an incredible partner behind my creative endeavors. He is also the Co-Founder of the recording studio, GRL SND, that we built together. Pursuing a creative career is a huge risk to take, and it comes with struggles and setbacks, but he always encouraged me even when I wanted to give up. Also, I want to give a big shoutout to my parents for having a change of heart in my career path by supporting me and helping me develop the studio. Their support has been invaluable to the development of GRL SND. Furthermore, I am so grateful to my in-laws for believing in me and investing in the studio without asking for anything in return. Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to all of my friends who have been my support system during this journey. They always motivate me to work harder towards my goals and reassure me that my dream is becoming a reality.

Without all these people in my life, I wouldn’t be where I’m today. Having a support system is extremely important to achieving your goals in life, and I’m thankful to have exceptional individuals in my corner.
