We had the good fortune of connecting with Timothy Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Timothy, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The process of creating an artistic publication has a set of reciprocal relations much like an exposure triangle. You can have two of the three attributes when planning a production: Good, cheap, fast. When I produce a book of a quality I’m content with, at a price point I know my audience can afford- it is discounted against my own time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started making photographs as an extension of my involvement in DIY / Underground music subcultures, where having your own little label or press- even if it’s just for your band, or just for your zine, is just how it’s done. While my output has shifted far from any relation to punk or experimental music scenes since my first zine in 2015, I publish my work with that same spirit.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This city is blessed with some of the greatest galleries dedicated to photography- I’d make anyone visiting me come along to Gallery Luisotti, The Marshall Gallery, and The Hammer Museum to start. I’d bring them out to eat Sonoratown, and out for cocktails at The Grasshopper. And I’d bring them to Signal Hill, to see where the apocalypse has been being born since the turn of the last century- at least the view is nice.
