Meet Tj Floss | Designer and Creator of Amerikan Outkast

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tj Floss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tj, how do you think about risk?
I believe taking risk is a part of life, not just in business. People often limit their own possibilities because of the fear of taking risk. So many people are afraid of taking chances. Being a small brand in the street fashion industry is very challenging, so taking risk is essential and what has helped the brand continue to thrive. To be honest, the name of my brand is a risk itself. To name a clothing brand something bold like Amerikan Outkast was risky. I knew that there was a chance that people may misunderstand the brand.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Amerikan Outkast is inspired by American history. I like to bring awareness issues that effect society to the forefront and display it through fashion. AO is also a vehicle to inform and inspire, so a lot of our pieces are controversial and relay a message. This allows us to get more involved and connect with the people. I believe this is what makes AO different than other brands. I also never wanted to be a brand that was solely based on fashion. Although the brand is now based in LA, it started in New York City. That’s where I was born and raised, Queens to be exact. I’ve actually only been here in LA about four years. But it’s been some of the most rewarding and thriving years for AO. Moving to a new city was a challenge, but it did not discourage me from pursuing my dreams. Shortly after moving here we did pop up shops at local spots on melrose, and the brand started really growing organically. Staying consistent was key to our success. This is how the brand continues to grow. Being a small brand in a big city is so easy to go unnoticed, so being consistent is everything. Another key is always staying true to our message and vision.
I want the world to know that my brand is not just about clothes, it’s about inspiring others. I had every reason to give up on myself from finances to environments, but I overcame them by believing in myself and my vision.
A moment I’m proud of was back in NYC. NBA player Iman Shumpert was listed as one of the most stylish players and he was featured wearing a bomber jacket from AO. This really created a buzz for the brand, and from there we just continued to drop several collections and pieces that artist such as; Jermaine Dupree, The Game, Waka Flocka, and other entertainers can be seen wearing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a major foodie. Everyone that knows me knows I’m always looking for new dope spots to eat good food. LA has so many different varieties of foods to try out, and because It’s LA almost all these places are not just great food, but the atmosphere and people are also dope! One of my favorite places to eat is Beach 26. I recommend this place all the time, It’s a super nice brunch spot. The food and drinks are great and the vibes are definitely worth checking out. I also like taking people who visit LA to famous movie locations. So many great films were made here, but it’s something about seeing it in real life. It’s also highly recommended we make a trip to the local dispensary’s. There’s so many out here, it’s like candy land lol. I’m also very active in giving back. I often take people down to skid row to see the other side of the glamor and glitz in Los Angeles.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give my girlfriend Chelsea major credit. She has helped behind the scenes so much, and this allows me to really focus on the creative side of the business. We come together to reach the business goals and just make things happen. I’ve realized that it’s super difficult to try to be a one man team. We all need a team or someone else that believes in the vision to help us reach success.
