Meet Toby Lau

We had the good fortune of connecting with Toby Lau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toby, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business came from my experiences working in the commercial gym environment. I often struggled with uneducated salesmen who were more focused on selling memberships than actually helping clients improve. I realized I didn’t want to keep working for a business that prioritized profit over people’s results. Instead, I wanted the freedom to work for myself, focus on creating real change, and ensure that clients truly get the outcomes they deserve. Becoming my own boss also gives me the opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful way, without being restricted by company policies that limit how much we can actually help.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career started as a personal trainer at LA Fitness, and later I moved to a local women’s gym to continue developing my skills. One moment that completely changed my path was working with a client in her 50s. I asked her to do a simple exercise on the floor, and she looked at me and asked, “How do you get on the floor?” That response shocked me—it made me realize how something as basic as getting down and back up, which most of us take for granted, could feel impossible for some people.
That moment opened my eyes to how many people over 50 struggle with fundamental movements. From then on, I dedicated myself to focusing on Senior Fitness. My mission became helping older adults build the strength, mobility, and confidence to handle real-life situations—like getting up from the ground after a fall or moving more freely in daily life.
Training seniors requires patience, creativity, and empathy. Unlike the general population, many seniors carry fears or limitations that make movement feel intimidating. Every session is different because no two people’s bodies—or experiences—are the same. But that’s what makes it rewarding: every small progress is a huge win.
What I want the world to know is this: human movement is the foundation of our daily living. Tiny bad habits, if left unchecked, can add up and turn into big problems over time. My work is about helping people rebuild those foundations so they can move, live, and age with confidence. That’s what excites me most about what I do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Places to check out will be : Griffith Observatory, Hollywood sign, the Getty Center, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Santa Monica Pier and PCH.
Restaurants to visit will be: In N Out, République, FuRaiBo, Bestia & Taco Truck.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my past and present clients who have trusted me with their health and wellness journey. Their trust and support have given me the opportunity to do the work I love and grow in this career. Without them believing in me and allowing me to be part of their progress, I wouldn’t be able to continue doing what I do today.
