We had the good fortune of connecting with Toiya Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Toiya, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my brand is my faith in what I do! I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I’m called to help people through my music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a music lover my whole life. I discovered my purpose while singing in my church choir. I just knew that that is one of the main reasons I’m on this earth. I started doing recording sessions for different artists that sing Pop, Country, R&B, Hip Hop and Gospel music. Eventually I branched out and did my own project and I’m currently recording and preparing to release more music this year.

My biggest challenge is challenging myself to be better! I have people around me that help me with that part.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that it’s important to know the business side of things. You need to know everything that’s going on with your artistry.

I want the world to know that if you start moving in the direction of your dream you will have everything you need.

Also, it is OK to be uniquely you! Your music, art, poetry or whatever it is you do isn’t for everybody, but it’s for a certain group of people. JUST DO IT and it will reach them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend to Venice Beach to sight see. Then I would take them to one of my favorite restaurants called Houston’s. We would probably go to Hollywood and walk around. I’m tired just writing about it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my parents James and LaVera Barnes! I miss them both so much! In our home a lot of gospel, jazz and R&B music was played and it inspired me and shaped me musically. I would also like to shout out my Pastors Owen and Audrey Black who came into my life at just the right time to pray for me, encourage me and cover me.
