We had the good fortune of connecting with Tokie(Jiayin) Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tokie(Jiayin), how do you think about risk?
For me, taking risks is like the secret ingredient that keeps my life and career flowing smoothly. It’s been the driving force behind some of the most transformative moments in my journey. From the decision to move alone to the States for my Choreography master’s to the experiences of crafting and presenting shows, collaborating with admired individuals, and stepping into new roles – all these choices were rooted in taking risks.

Each time I faced a new risk, I can’t deny there was a moment of hesitation. I’d ponder if I was fully prepared or if the timing was right. But as an artist, I consider it my duty to explore uncharted territories. A standout example of this mindset was seen in my recent project, “Because, You’re Worth It.” It was an immersive theater experience that blended dance, toy theater, and digital art. People doubted its feasibility due to technical complexities and budget constraints, but my conviction in its potential drove me forward.

In my eyes, risk-taking is more than just a choice; it’s a fundamental responsibility for an artist. It’s like the key that unlocks doors to unexplored realms, inviting audiences to witness something entirely new. I believe that artists are like custodians of uncharted human experiences, and I’m fortunate to be among them. My journey with risk-taking has shown me that it’s not just about making decisions – it’s about reshaping the very landscape of art itself.

When I think back to the challenges “Because, You’re Worth It” faced, it becomes evident that every risk carries the potential to transform obstacles into opportunities. Despite initial doubts and skepticism, we managed to turn a regular theater space into an imaginative shopping mall – we called it the Fairyland. Working closely with a dedicated team, we exceeded expectations and created something beyond what I could have imagined.

Embracing risk-taking has shaped me into an artist who thrives on pushing boundaries. It’s this willingness to venture into the unknown that has transformed ordinary moments into remarkable accomplishments. With every risk I’ve taken, I’ve come to realize that I hold the key to unlock new realms of creativity and imagination. It’s not just about making choices; it’s about having the power to unlock doors to unexplored possibilities.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m Jiayin Wang, or Tokie, hailing from Hangzhou, China. My journey into the realm of art began with a childhood passion for dance, nurtured by my parents who enrolled me in training at the age of four. This foundation was built on Chinese dance, instilling discipline and technique, though I often felt confined by its prescribed beauty.

During my studies at the California Institute of the Arts, a new world opened up. Contemporary dance liberated my expression, offering a canvas free from predefined standards. Yet, this transition wasn’t without its challenges. Shifting from traditional Chinese dance to a more expansive artistic realm required breaking personal and cultural barriers.

My artistic path led me to straddle two spheres: the commercial arena and the world of theater and galleries. In the commercial realm, I’ve collaborated with names like LOOKwhat Studio, Flower Knows Cosmetics, and Hong Kong NetEase Interactive Entertainment Limited, infusing each project with my distinct touch. Meanwhile, my performances in theaters and galleries allow me to share my inner thoughts in a captivating manner.

Navigating these diverse artistic worlds has taught me the importance of staying true to oneself and embracing different viewpoints. This ongoing process of growth has shaped my brand as a conduit between cultures, where creativity flows freely.

Diving into digital collage art has been an extension of my creative exploration. Transforming static images into dynamic visual narratives brings me immense joy, and this fascination often finds its way into my work.
My art is a mirror reflecting both my personal experiences and the world at large. I aim to create pieces that resonate with others, sparking emotions and connections that transcend boundaries. While I’ve come far, my journey is one of continuous learning, seeking to blend tradition with innovation and celebrating the beauty that arises from embracing diverse influences.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To start off, we’d take a day to escape the city and head to my favorite chilling spot, Point Dume in Malibu. The one-hour drive from our location would be well worth it as we soak in the stunning vistas of headlands, cliffs, and rocky coves. During spring, the landscape transforms into a sea of yellow poppy flowers, making it an enchanting sight. We’d spend the day exploring the vast beach access and reveling in the natural beauty surrounding us. It’s the perfect place to kick back, relax, and appreciate nature’s wonders.

For a unique shopping experience, I’d guide my friend to the Los Feliz flea market. With its distinct selection of designer pieces and vintage clothing, they’re sure to find treasures that tell stories from the past. I’d share my own discovery of vintage jeans that fit like a dream from the 70s – a rarity for me. The market’s vibrant atmosphere and the chance to connect with interesting people make it a must-visit. In the same vicinity, we’d check out The Little Knittery, a haven for yarn enthusiasts. It’s a soothing experience to explore the array of colors and textures, allowing the imagination to run wild with possibilities for future creative projects.
