We had the good fortune of connecting with Tommy Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tommy, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success, to me, is defined as happiness, knowledge, and community. To find myself in a position to learn from someone greater, surrounded by people dedicated to a common goal, who are enjoying themselves; makes me happy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My line of work? I am in the film industry here in Los Angeles. I am a video engineer, photographer, cinematographer, you name it. My passion stems from the world. I love to witness, explore, and experience the world in any way possible. To me, capturing those images in a camera is one of the best ways to do so. Working here at Glass Engine, I’ve been able to work alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood, promoting some of the largest blockbuster films to come out in recent years.

Getting here took quite a while, I am extremely proud of where I am and am excited for the opportunities to come. Many days before Glass Engine, were hard. I was working as a freelancer in the film industry while having an overnight job to help supplement myself financially. Making a living in this industry isn’t easy to start, it takes time and dedication. There were times when I almost couldn’t afford rent, I can’t even remember how many days I’ve had where I was on the verge of overdrafting on bank statements. Those days are in the past now, but they will live with me forever. That was probably between the years of 18-22, there were amazing times during those years though. It wasn’t all bad, but the bad lingered, y’know?

Throughout that time, my community mattered the most. I wasn’t alone during those times. Having people and friends who I consider family along with the mental dedication/belief that I could succeed is what drove me through those times.

During that time, turning from a young adult into a more mature young adult I learned that it can be good to not be the smartest person in the room. Modesty goes much further than being boastful, and there’s always a lesson to be learned every day in life. Listening goes a long way.

I pride myself in my work ethic, I like to think that I can learn things fairly quickly when shown in person. My struggle is what drove my passion and now being able to share my passion with the world is what makes my art fun for me. I love what I do and have no intention of stopping any time soon.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first place we would start would have to be In-n-out. It’s such a staple for California, as a tourist, everyone should try it at least once. I would then take them to Little Tokyo to explore the city. You have such a large dose of culture in that area, it’s lively with people, art, and scenery.

Later I’d love to show them a hike through the Angeles National Forest. I love being outdoors and Switzer Falls is my favorite hike to do in LA currently. It just takes you away from the city and gives you an experience that is the opposite of the stereotypical thought of LA.

One of my favorite bars in LA is a must, Wurstkuche, in the Arts District. It’s a German bar with over 20 unique drafts mostly from Belgium and Germany. In my opinion, it has the best beer options in LA, accompanied by the best hotdogs.

No trip to LA would be complete without a Dodger game if, you’re able to go, the sunset over Dodger Stadium is second to none!

There are so many other things on the list, but these are some of the main places I’d prioritize on a nice week-long trip to LA.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to dedicate this to so many people but to name a few, my girlfriend Audrey who’s been with me through it all. My sister Dominique, who’s been an avid inspiration to me in many ways of life. Lastly of course my parents for whom I wouldn’t be here if not for them.

A lot of my journey stems from networking and communicating with others. That being said the person who inadvertently introduced me to, what would be, an amazing group of people who have me where I am today was none other than James Sandoval. Without a doubt, my story has elevated thanks to our friendship and efforts to strive toward success.
