We had the good fortune of connecting with Tommy Lennon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tommy, what do you attribute your success to?
I think that a truly successful artist or brand is one that is able to remain genuine while reaching as many people as possible. People talk about artists and companies “selling out” when they start creating art in newer or trendier realms, but I don’t think that updated style necessarily indicates that someone has given up on their original vision. Evolution is natural, so it’s most important for me that I hold on to what I genuinely love and stand behind as I grow and change as an artist.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I do tend to take a do-it-yourself stance when it comes to my artistry. For my recent single, ‘Remind You’ (a collaboration with messy zach), I played songwriter, singer, photographer, graphic designer, and director to produce all of the creative. I’ve spent so much time trying to hone all of these different skills so that I can support myself as an artist, but also so that I can support others in their artistry. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the collaborative process, so I think it’s really important to collaborate with others and help them along their way. Treat others how you wish to be treated, right?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I tend to curate an itinerary for visitors based on their personal interests. If I know someone is eager to visit famous sites that they’ve seen on TV, I’ll walk them down Hollywood Blvd/the Walk of Fame, Rodeo Dr., Santa Monica Pier, etc. If I know someone would prefer more natural wonders, I tend to venture outside of the city more: Vasquez Rocks, Joshua Tree, Sequoia National Forest, etc.
The common thread that I like to include through every visit are the restaurants. There is so much food in LA, and I obviously have my favorites. What I really love are when people come to visit and they have new restaurants they want to try that I haven’t tried yet!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel immensely lucky to have a family that is nothing but supportive. Both of my parents, my sister, and my brother all encourage me to push forward, especially when the going gets tough. They are all brilliant and talented in so many ways, so I feel like I can touch the sky with their lift.
I also feel very fortunate to have beautifully inspiring friends all over the country and the world. Most of my friends have their own creative endeavors, and watching them flourish helps me feel driven as well.
