The power of cinema to transport people to different worlds, evoke empathy, and spark meaningful discussions has always fascinated me. Being part of the filmmaking process allows me to combine my technical skills with my artistic vision, creating immersive and captivating experiences for viewers. My include short films “In Your Brain”, “MARS”, “QiaoEr”, and so on. My works have won the Best Production Award in the Fifth Asian Micro Film Festival, Excellence Award in the First Golden Colt Award, and have also been selected for Pingyao International Film Festival, Italy Visioncorte International Film Festival and others. My name is Tong Luo and I live in Los Angeles. As a Film Director, Editor and Art Director, movie is an extraordinary medium that changed the way I perceive the world. I always want to explore the new diversity of this world as it comes with new possibilities and challenges.

My childhood and family are the sources of my dream of making films. My experience in Kyrgyzstan as an international volunteer lets me have a close encounter with the orphan community, which inspired me to be more aware of the fact that I could use film to fight for what I believed in and so make certain changes. In a sea of filmmakers, what sets me apart is my unwavering passion for storytelling and my unique artistic vision.

I’m currently focused on film directing, editing, and production designing. My latest short film “In Your Brain” is a story that concentrates on child trafficking and the self-redemption of a woman who lost her son. I take immense pride in crafting films that not only entertain but also resonate deeply with audiences, leaving a lasting impact on their hearts and minds. What excites me the most is the opportunity to explore uncharted territories within the realm of cinema, pushing creative boundaries and challenging the status quo.

My journey to where I am today professionally was far from easy. It involved countless hours of hard work, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of honing my craft. Six years of working on film industry have equipped me with the skill concerning story and editing, I faced numerous challenges, from financial constraints to self-doubt and external criticism. However, these hurdles only fueled my determination to overcome them. I sought mentorship from industry veterans, collaborated with like-minded creatives, and constantly sought ways to improve my skills and storytelling techniques.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way are invaluable. I’ve come to understand that failure is not a setback but an opportunity for growth and learning. I’d love to introduce my own production brand “RKLG”, which is dedicated to producing the finest short films and supporting their participation in film festivals. My journey has been a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and staying true to my vision. As I continue to grow as a filmmaker, my commitment to storytelling that evokes emotion and introspection remains unwavering. I believe that art has the power to transform lives, and it is this belief that drives me to tell stories that resonate with the hearts of audiences across the globe.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend came to visit Los Angeles, I was determined to show them the best time ever! For our week-long trip, I planned a diverse and exciting itinerary that would capture the essence of this vibrant city. We started by exploring the iconic landmarks, hiking up to the Griffith Observatory to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the city and taking a leisurely stroll along the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. For a taste of LA’s culinary scene, we dined at trendy food trucks in the Arts District, indulged in gourmet delights at Grand Central Market, and savored exquisite sushi in Little Tokyo.

To experience the local culture, we immersed ourselves in the arts at the Getty Center, visited the hip galleries in Culver City, and caught the sunset at Santa Monica Pier. Los Angeles is a city known for its diverse and vibrant neighborhoods, so we spent time exploring the unique vibes of places like Silver Lake, Echo Park. One of the highlights of our trip was the day we spent in Malibu, driving along the Pacific Coast Highway to visit beautiful beaches, and then savoring fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant. We even took a surf lesson, which turned out to be a hilarious and unforgettable experience.

In my view, some of the most fun, interesting, and exciting things to check out in LA are its vibrant food scene, rich cultural diversity, and the laid-back beach lifestyle. The city offers a perfect blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty, making every moment memorable and filled with excitement. By the end of our adventure-packed week, my best friend fell in love with Los Angeles, and I knew we had experienced a trip we would cherish forever.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a massive shoutout to my exceptional directing professor, Tommy O’Haver, a director and writer who is known for An American Crime (2007), Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss (1998) and Ella Enchanted (2004). Throughout the entire process of crafting my short film, In Your Brain, he was an absolute pillar of support and guidance. From the initial concept to the final edit, his insightful feedback and expertise were instrumental in bringing my vision to life. His dedication to nurturing creativity and encouraging experimentation allowed me to explore uncharted territory and find my distinct directorial style. His emphasis on storytelling and the intricacies of shot composition helped me elevate every scene, especially for the scene of interrogation room, which makes my film truly stand out. Prof. Tommy’s passion for cinema is truly contagious, and it’s clear that teaching directing is not just a job for him but a true vocation. I am incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from someone as talented, insightful, and inspiring as him. Thank you for being an outstanding mentor and for shaping my growth as a filmmaker in ways that I will carry with me throughout my entire career.
