We had the good fortune of connecting with Toru Izumida and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toru, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Creating artwork is not just an act of self-expression; it is a profound form of communication that bridges the present with the past, connecting us with the creative spirits of our predecessors throughout history. When I engage in the process of making art, I am reminded that I am never truly alone. Each stroke of the brush, each mark on the canvas, is a dialogue with the countless artists who came before me, a continuation of their legacy, and a testament to the enduring human desire to connect and share our experiences across time. This realization fills me with a deep sense of connection, as if my creative journey is intertwined with theirs, forming an unbroken chain of artistic expression that transcends generations.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began my artistic journey as a painter, immersing myself in the traditional medium of brush and canvas. However, as time passed and my creative interests evolved, I found myself increasingly drawn to the world of media art. This transition may seem like a significant shift, but in reality, it represents a natural progression in my artistic practice rather than a departure from my roots. The techniques and principles I developed as a painter continue to inform and enrich my work as a media artist. The two disciplines are deeply interconnected, with my background in painting providing a strong foundation that influences the way I approach and conceptualize my media art projects. Though the mediums have changed, the underlying themes, aesthetics, and creative impulses remain consistent, creating a cohesive narrative throughout my body of work.
