Meet Tre Crews | Photographer & Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tre Crews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tre, what do you attribute your success to?
Always being open to learn and grow. Every project I go in to, I go with an open mind because things are always changing on set or an idea in real time of shoot has to be tweaked. Having this mindset has allowed me to let go of trying to perfect things and be closed off from trying alternative approaches when something is coming out the way I expected it to be. Becoming a malleable individual and being able to flex so many skills has really gotten me far in the industry.
Being a scientific researcher in my previous life, I naturally have a sense of wanting to experiment and theorize my imagery coupled with lengthy research on consciousness, object making, architecture, and philosophies of memory.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work lives in the fertile borderlands between art and science, between the waking world and the world of the mind. I think what sets my work apart from others, having the capability to hone into a new aesthetic that fits under the umbrella of what i am inspired by. All of my recent work has a cooler tone to it and it’s only been a year since I’ve introduced that.
Being adaptable with and critically thinking about my work in a way that serves a deep analysis to myself is what has got me to where I am at in my career today.
Some of the lessons I’ve learned over the 4 years of being a freelance artist in the commercial landscape of fashion and product work is to never be afraid to express your worth, be honest with your skill level and being open to learn more, and to never box yourself in. Versatility goes a long way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I feel like the week would most likely be a Brooklyn only itinerary. There are so many places in the borough that are real gems and have helped me grow my community.
We would definitely be grabbing coffee at all of my favorite spots like Che and Botani located in Bed-Stuy, then in Carroll Gardens we would check out DAE. In Bushwick I ONLY go to SEY.
To do some shopping we would go to Sincerely, Tommy and thrift in Bushwick/Williamsburg.
To go eat we go to places like Ozakaya, Lalou, Cervos, and an insane food crawl in Queens.
We would hang out at places like the Noguchi Museum, Strand Bookstore, and on a beautiful spring or summer day, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Probably would finish the day with a bike ride at dusk on the Prospect Park loop.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my community of friends that have really helped me understand the importance of gratitude and patience on my journey. I also want to shout out Jane Wade for being not only a client but a friend who has really helped mold a chunk of my success in the last year. Lastly, the book “Matter & Memory” by Henri Bergson. This book has really been the foundation for most of my personal inspiration for my work.
