We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevor Goober and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trevor, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I can’t remember a time where I ever considered another option. Growing up, everything on my radar seemed to be about making things and participating in different art forms. I was quickly obsessed with entertainment, from the Wiggles to Ferris Bueller to Monty Python, anything I could get my hands on. Supposedly, as a toddler I told my family I was going to be a film director. I assume it was shortly afterward that I learned what that job entails (i.e. not being the center of attention) and I started writing and performing sketches instead. I’m not sure how intentional it was, but by the time I graduated, I had built up a career of my own that I could continue to craft, and thank goodness for that.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a comedian and actor who writes weird songs that are sometimes funny. I never envisioned that that sentence would sum up my full-time career, I’m extremely lucky.
I started out by posting comedy sketches online as a teenager, which were embarrassing and have mostly been removed, but those led me to appear in some viral videos (I think my overall total reaches over 200 million views? Mind-boggling). I moved from Vancouver to Toronto, Canada to start performing throughout the stand-up scene while studying at The Second City. I was mostly writing observational bits, I believe I was once called “Walmart John Mulaney,” which is devastatingly accurate. Eventually I got bored of that and right before a show that was a part of the Just for Laughs Festival, I felt a sudden urge to throw out my material and show up with a ukulele, sunglasses and unabashed confidence. I apologize to anyone who was in that crowd that night, but I found my artistic voice.
Since then, it’s been a whirlwind. I moved to LA in 2021 and performed around the city while continuing my acting career – I’m about to star in a movie called The Second Coming of John Cooper where I’m billed next to Rob Corddry and Brian Posehn, what?! I write music of my own as well as songs for film & TV, while hosting a weekly radio show called The Goober Hour with guests like “Weird Al” Yankovic and Kate Micucci. Pardon the name drops.
Projects and gigs have come and gone, and I am just so grateful to still be doing this. It’s been such a wild ride, yet it feels like I’m just getting started. Is it possible to be a veteran and rookie at the same time?!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh boy, I’m Canadian and fear my basic answers would upset you. I’m such a big fan of the alt-comedy venues in this city – the Elysian, the Dynasty Typewriter, the Hotel Cafe. You can find such great stuff and people. My first week here, I went to Pete Holmes’ show at the Largo and witnessed Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham duet on a song and I knew I had moved to the right place. I mean… that’s magical.
Please don’t ask me about food spots, I am a frequenter of Panera Bread.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m grateful for all of my inspirations and mentors growing up, but in this current chapter of my life, I am most thankful for the friends I surround myself with. I did the usual “actor/creative” go-around when I was younger – agents, publicists, studio jobs – but I’ve discovered that you really can be in charge of your own creative decisions and image (whatever that is), so having fellow artists that I trust as close collaborators makes a world of difference. My friends Jackson LaFleur, Julia McCammon, C.J. Pizarro (aka Mista Cookie Jar), Harrison Houde and Jules Margaret are all brilliant creatives in their own right, and have been kind enough to listen to every good or bad idea I’ve had through this last year. I usually have about seven projects going on at once, mostly my own doing, and these lovely souls’ input are what have saved me from burnout. I love my friends.
