We had the good fortune of connecting with Trina MacDonald Aeen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
To have creative freedom, set and meet my own goals and financial independence.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My products are handmade soy candles and melts. I chose to make soy candles because the environment is important to me. My candles are eco-friendly because the wax I use is 100% soy wax made from soy beans grown here in the USA. The soy wax is completely sustainable and contain no harsh chemicals, free from phthalates and cancer causing carcinogens. Because my products are made with soy wax and fragrance oils that are made with clean ingredients that are infused with essential oils, they are not only  vegan and cruelty free, they are a healthier, cleaner burning product leading to a longer lasting candle.

What I am most excited about is the feedback I receive from my customers about my products. They really seem to enjoy my products and that makes me very proud of what I am creating.

While I am still working to grow my small business, I try to challenge myself to grow both personally and professionally. It is not easy, and there are still many obstacles that I need to overcome. Not being a college graduate, somethings come a bit harder for me and may take me a bit longer to figure out, but I enjoy the challenges. I get a lot of inspiration from family and friends, social media, etc.

I think what I would like others to know about my brand is that it will always be eco-friendly and 100% vegan. It’s important to me that my candles are healthy and clean burning for my customers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Santa Clarita is a beautiful city. We have a multitude of bike paths and paseos. We would hike and bike around the city. One of my favorite spots is Bridgeport Marketplace. There is a small lake with many ducks, geese and turtles. It’s so peaceful and beautiful. Many restaurants to enjoy lunch or dinner. Six Flags Magic Mountain would be a must do!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If it weren’t for my good friend Karen Ortiz, I would never have started my candle business. She has been an inspiration and a creative mentor. It was Karen who had suggested I start making candles. I was reluctant, but she was persistent and I gave in. I enjoyed it, and people seem to really like my product so I decided to make this little hobby into a small business. And of course, my amazing husband. Without his support and patience I would not be where I am today.
