We had the good fortune of connecting with Tryphena Wade and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tryphena, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balance is something that I’ve always been keenly aware of. But I haven’t always been good at achieving a healthy balance for myself. As I’ve gotten older, gained more life experience, and moved further into my career, I’ve truly embraced the need for balance in my life. There was a time when I was so desperate to do what I thought was necessary to move forward in my career, that I didn’t think much about other aspects of my life. I had such tunnel vision that I didn’t put much effort into relationships, hobbies, wealth building, or anything that provided pure enjoyment. That resulted in exhaustion and a bit of resentment. It wasn’t until I started traveling more that I began to realize that it was possible to be focused on my goal while also enjoying my life. At this point I am keenly aware of taking the time to create balance. It’s important to be focused on your vision, but a full life is only experienced if you truly take the time to enjoy the journey. And you can only enjoy the journey if you provide yourself moments to rest, reflect, and do things for nothing more than enjoyment. This is what replenishes you and ensures that your cup is full so that you can continue pouring into others knowing that you’re fully fueled to continue on the path toward your vision. Anything that’s important to you deserves your attention; family, relationships, recreation, spiritual growth, personal growth, health, and career. Balancing all these things requires intentionality and the recognition what’s truly important to you.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, “my work” is many things!! I’m a professional actor of 17 years. I’ve performed overseas, on stages across North America, and on Broadway in Disney’s The Lion King. Recently I made the leap from NYC to LA to shift my lifestyle and pursue more opportunities in tv and film.
I’m also a writer. I self-published my first book, The Heart Works: A Collection, in 2017. The book is full of personal stories, journal entries, and essays that I wrote over several years and compiled as a collection.
In 2019 I wrote, directed, starred in, and produced my first short film, “Dear Carefree Black Girl” and I’ve recently completed my second short film which will be produced this year. I’m also in the process of writing and developing a feature-length film.
In addition to all that, I’m a Certified Life Coach specializing in Fearless Living. I coach women through the process of naming, confronting, and conquering their fears. My life has been full of ups and downs, excitement, and adventure. For many years I thought that all I had and wanted revolved around theatre. But as I’ve lived, worked, traveled, and grown, I’ve discovered so many layers to myself. Slow moments in my career have helped me discover new levels of creativity within myself and I’ve learned to embrace all sides of me. It’s funny how the hardest times show you just how much God has placed inside you. I’ve constantly had to overcome fear in order to move to a new level in my endeavors. Several years ago I realized that so many of us are living our lives governed by fear. It became my goal, my mission, to help others learn how to live fully in spite of fear, knowing that fear may come, but that we have the power to choose whether or not it will control us. It is work that truly excites me! Embracing life fearlessly is my goal in all that I do, whether performing, writing, or coaching.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, Covid has not yet given me the opportunity to fully explore LA. But I’m a sucker for a hike and a beach and thankfully there’s no shortage of those things. I also love a roadtrip so a drive up the PCH is fully necessary. Visits to Pismo Beach, McWay Falls, and Carmel-By-The Sea are a must. Enjoying the drum circles in Venice Beach would definitely be on the itinerary. We’d also have to drive the Rim of the World and stop by Lake Arrowhead and perhaps have a spa day at Glen Ivy. I love a great glass of red wine and I’m still searching for the best wine bar in the area. I’m open for suggestions! As far as food, SunCafe or Lemonade would definitely be on the list. Like I said, I’m new here so shoot me some suggestions! 😉

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my shoutout to my family for releasing me into the world; to Howard University for molding me, and to the world for teaching me lessons that no book holds.
