We had the good fortune of connecting with Tsz Chung Lau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tsz Chung, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because of my passion for art and its profound impact on my worldview. Growing up surrounded by the works of comic artists like Takeshi Obata and Toriyama Akira, as well as being immersed in a vibrant comic and animation culture, broadened my imagination and love for creativity. Delving into traditional art further expanded my horizons. The training with aesthetics of art history masters got me an entrance to look at art differently. Through art, I discovered new ways of exploring the world and expressing life’s wonders, leading me to live with a career where I could continuously explore and share these perspectives through my work.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is based on my exploration into both traditional and concept art. By immersing myself in these two areas, I’ve cultivated my own aesthetic that blends elements from each, resulting in a different understanding that sets me apart from others. I’m particularly proud of my ability and theory combining traditional art techniques with modern digital tools. It makes my work with more variation. Professionally, reaching this point hasn’t been easy to me. I’ve faced challenges such as navigating the transition between the artistic practices, as well as the pressures of thriving in the competitive concept art world. However, each obstacle has been a learning opportunity, pushing me to sharpen my skills and deepen my understanding. Along the way, I learned the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and continuous learning which made my journey more interesting and creative.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the LA area for a week, I would ensure they experience the best of what the city has to offer. We’d start our trip with a visit to the Getty Museum, where we could immerse ourselves in world-class art collections and stunning architecture. For lunch, we’d head to the Last Bookstore, a unique and iconic literary haven in downtown LA, where we could explore its labyrinth of books and grab a bite at one of the nearby cafes. Throughout the week, we’d explore different neighborhoods, enjoying meals at local eateries. We’d also take time to relax at the beach and catch a show at one of LA’s famous theaters. It would be a week filled with art, culture, adventure memories in the city of Los Angeles.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely, I would like to extend a shoutout to my mentor Kevin Jick and my friend Chenghang Liu. Their support, valuable advice, and encouragement have been instrumental in my art journey. Kevin’s guidance and expertise have helped shape my artistic perspective. Chenghang’s friendship and support have provided me with invaluable encouragement during challenging times. I am truly grateful for their contributions to my growth and success as an artist.
