We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Christopher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ty, how does your business help the community?
Being a Candle Maker, I have heard so many reason as to why people don’t buy or burn candles anymore. It is my job to educate them on why my candles are different and in doing so it has helped the community understand that not all candles are made the same and some candles can help cleanses an environment literally (like beeswax candles) and spiritually. One of my many titles is also a minister, often when people visit me they receive a word of encouragement and a hug. I believe I have been put here to spread love and joy. My business helps me connect with people and spread the love to all.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is making unique aromatic intentional candles, home sprays, and organic body oil fragrances. I think what sets me apart from other Chandlers is my gift to bring together one of a kind aromas which last throughout the life span of my products. I am often told my candles fill the room a beautiful aroma without lighting the candle. I get excited to hear feedback like this, it helps in continuing to perfect my craft. Recently I’ve added aromatic sprays and body fragrances to my product line. Hearing how these aromas are long lasting and the Body fragrance oils are therapeutic brings me joy. When I was younger I thought I wanted to nurse. I took courses to become a nurse, but the passion was’t there. I always knew I was meant to help people, but I didn’t know how. Now being on this path of a creator I know am fulfilling my purpose. I am proud I didn’t let fear stop me from pursuing a life of an entrepreneur. I am happy I didn’t listen to the negative thoughts but I kept pressing. Staying encouraged when I don’t have the money to purchase materials or pay for an event to sell at. These are real challenges I still face some months. However, what I know is when you are walking in purpose what is meant to be will be and every time I faced a challenge like this through prayer and releasing worry and doubt everything worked. I’ve learned to not give into the negative thoughts and to keep persevering. I’ve said this many times, my company is built on faith and I am grateful to continue to grow and expand through faith. This is just the beginning of my story and there’s constant revisions. The best is yet to come!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think evening whale watching in Long Beach on Harbor Breeze Cruise is a perfect way to appreciate the city and the surrounding coastal cities like San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes. The calmness of being in ocean away from the busy city and enjoying dolphins swim and leap in and out of the water or Pelicans dive for food is beautiful. After whale watching going to have dinner at BO-beau kitchen + roof tap for small plates and wine. That is a perfect evening for me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I look back on my business and where I am now 2 years later I honestly want to thank the Second Saturdays Community. My dear friend Miki Kiiveri introduced me to Teresa Baxter, Fair Trade Co-Founder, I remember feeling so inadequate to even think of selling my candles at a Pop-up event. However, Miki encouraged me for months to speak with Teresa. Finally I grew the courage to talk to her and Teresa has been so supported and encouraging. There are times when I don’t feel like creating a new scent or I am at a creative block then I would speak with Teresa at a Second Saturdays event and unknowingly she would give me a word of encouragement that would ignite my creativity flame. The Second Saturday Community from its vendors to those who shop there monthly have been so amazing and truly a blessing. I dedicate tis shoutout to them!
