We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Manteuffel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ty, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
As a character and creature artist, as well as a world builder, the habits that have guided my success are deeply rooted in a blend of consistency, curiosity, resilience, and passion. From the very beginning of my career, I recognized the importance of consistency—not just in practice, but in how I approach the entire creative process. Designing characters and creatures, as well as constructing the worlds they inhabit, can be a deeply complex and intricate endeavor. Each day in the studio is an opportunity to breathe life into new beings by refining details and crafting environments that make them feel real and believable. This daily commitment to honing my skills has been crucial in developing characters and worlds that resonate with depth and authenticity.
Curiosity is another driving force behind my work. The fields of character design, creature creation, and world-building are vast, with endless possibilities. I’m constantly exploring new ideas and inspirations, whether it’s studying the anatomy of real-life animals, diving into folklore and mythology, or experimenting with the latest CG technologies. This relentless curiosity pushes me to challenge the boundaries of what can be imagined and realized. By continuously seeking out new techniques and perspectives, I ensure that my work remains fresh, engaging, and full of life.
Resilience is one of the most valuable habits I’ve developed by embracing mistakes as part of the creative journey. Building characters, creatures, and entire worlds is a dynamic journey often marked by unexpected challenges and creative roadblocks. I’ve cultivated a mindset that transforms these obstacles into opportunities for growth. Overcoming them demands a blend of technical proficiency and a robust problem-solving approach. Whether it’s harmonizing realism with fantasy or constructing a cohesive world, each hurdle is met with flexibility and determination. Mistakes are an inevitable part of this imaginative process and embracing them is a valuable learning experience. By openly experimenting and not being afraid of stumbling, I’ve expanded the boundaries of my creativity, producing designs that are both innovative and captivating.
Embracing the entire creative process has been a key habit that has contributed to my success. I’ve learned that the journey—from the initial concept to the final render—is just as important as the end result. This process involves experimentation, making mistakes, and allowing ideas to evolve naturally. By staying connected to my work and remaining open to where the creative process leads me, I’ve found a deeper sense of authenticity and fulfillment in my designs. This holistic approach not only ensures that my work remains dynamic and engaging but also keeps the joy and passion alive in everything I create.
Ultimately, my success as a character and creature artist, as well as a world builder, is rooted in this combination of consistency, curiosity, resilience, and a deep love for the craft. Each character, creature, and world I design reflects the journey I’ve taken—one shaped by a relentless pursuit of growth, a willingness to explore the unknown, and an unwavering commitment to bringing imagination to life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey as a character and creature artist, as well as a world builder, has been driven by a deep passion for bringing unique beings to life and creating immersive worlds for them to inhabit. From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of conjuring fantastical creatures and environments from my imagination and translating them into tangible forms through art. This passion has been a constant motivator, fueling my desire to share my imagined realms with others and connect with audiences on a deeper level.
What sets my work apart is the fusion of detailed character and creature design with world-building. I don’t just create individual characters; I build the worlds they live in, ensuring that each creature feels like a natural inhabitant of its environment. This holistic approach allows me to create beings and worlds that evoke emotion, tell a story, and offer a truly immersive experience for the audience.
I am proud of the worlds I’ve built and the creatures that populate them. There’s immense satisfaction in knowing that the characters and environments I’ve designed can transport people to different realms, sparking their imaginations and making them feel connected to the stories I tell. One of the aspects I’m most excited about is the endless possibilities that come with world-building—each project offers a new opportunity to explore uncharted territories of creativity and to bring something entirely new and unique to life.
Getting to where I am today professionally was far from easy. The path has been filled with challenges, but it’s these obstacles that have shaped me into the artist I am today. Early on, I had to overcome the technical demands of mastering various tools and software, like ZBrush and Unreal Engine. This required countless hours of practice and a relentless pursuit of growth. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is not to be afraid of making mistakes. In a field as imaginative and complex as this, mistakes are inevitable, but I’ve learned to embrace them as part of the creative journey. Each mistake offers a chance to learn, adapt, and refine my work, ultimately leading to more innovative and compelling designs.
What I want the world to know about my story is that my work is not just about creating characters or worlds—it’s about building connections. Whether it’s through a fantastical creature that resonates with a viewer or an immersive world that draws them in, my goal is to evoke emotions and tell stories that leave a lasting impact. My brand is a reflection of my journey, shaped by passion, discipline, curiosity, and resilience. It’s a testament to the power of imagination and the endless possibilities that come with it.
In the end, what sets me apart is my dedication to the entire creative process, from the initial spark of inspiration to the final render. I’m committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in character and creature design and world-building, and I’m excited to continue sharing my imagined realms with the world.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m incredibly grateful for the people who have played a pivotal role in my journey as an artist, and I owe so much of my success to their support, mentorship, and love. First and foremost, I have to give a huge shoutout to my mother. From a young age, she recognized my passion for art and never hesitated to nurture it. She was always there with a new sketchbook, fresh art supplies, or just words of encouragement when I needed them most. Her unwavering belief in my talent gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and laid the foundation for everything I’ve accomplished.

When it comes to my professional development, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have had some of the best mentors in the industry during my time at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects. Jared Krichevsky and Maddie Spencer, two of the best creature concept designers working today, were instrumental in shaping my understanding of creature design. Their expertise and creative approaches inspired me to push the boundaries of what’s possible in creature creation, teaching me how to bring fantastical beings to life with both realism and imagination.

Paul Gaboury, a ZBrush master guru, was another key figure in my development. Paul is not only an amazing artist but also one of the most fun and engaging people to be around. His deep knowledge of ZBrush and his ability to teach it with humor and clarity made learning the tool an absolute joy. He showed me how to harness the full power of ZBrush, which has been crucial in my character and creature design work.

Damon Woods, a supremely talented character artist for games, taught me how to optimize characters for games and real-time rendering. His guidance was essential in helping me understand the technical and artistic balance required to create characters that are both visually stunning and performance-efficient. Damon’s insights into the gaming industry have been invaluable in my work as a character artist.

Miguel Ortega and Tran Ma are a powerhouse team who guided me through many aspects of my education, from look development and lighting to texturing, modeling, and beyond. They are Unreal Engine filmmakers and directors who are paving the way for Unreal Engine to be used as a powerful storytelling tool. Their mentorship was crucial in my development as an artist, and their innovative approach to storytelling continues to inspire my work.

Dane Smith was the first to push me to develop the toolset I use most in my work today, particularly with Unreal Engine. Dane’s problem-solving mindset and advocacy for Unreal Engine were instrumental in helping me refine my skills and develop my approach to world-building. His influence has had a lasting impact on how I approach my projects.

Anton Napierala, an expert in all things Unreal Engine, provided me with the tools and knowledge to build my own worlds from the ground up. His guidance was critical in helping me master Unreal Engine, enabling me to create immersive environments that feel alive and dynamic. Anton’s expertise gave me the confidence to push the boundaries of what I could achieve as a world builder.

Gerrin Tramis, an amazing concept artist and storyteller, taught me how to develop well-rounded and interesting characters in a way that serves the story being told. His focus on character development within the narrative context was a game-changer for me, helping me create characters that are not just visually compelling but also deeply connected to the worlds they inhabit.

John Brown, a talented traditional sculptor, instilled in me the fundamental knowledge of form and shape. He taught me to focus on silhouette and primary shapes, to find the apex of the curve and hit all the notes. John’s approach to sculpture has had a lasting influence on how I create and refine my characters and creatures.

Finally, I have to mention Alex Alvarez, the founder of the Gnomon School, who created the first tutorials I ever watched to learn 3D art. Alex’s vision for Gnomon and his commitment to education have had a profound impact on countless artists, myself included. His early tutorials were my gateway into the world of 3D art, and I’m deeply grateful for the foundation they provided.

Last but certainly not least, I have to give the biggest thanks to my wife, Erin. She has been my rock through every phase of my career, supporting me through thick and thin. She’s always understood the demands of my work and has given me the space and time I need to fully immerse myself in my passion. Her patience, encouragement, and belief in me have been a constant source of strength, and I truly couldn’t have achieved what I have without her by my side.

All of these individuals—my mother, my mentors at Gnomon, and my wife—deserve so much credit and recognition in my story. Their support has been the backbone of my journey, and I’m deeply grateful for everything they’ve done to help me get to where I am today.
