Meet Tyler Garrett | Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Hello, I’m Tyler Garrett. I am from a small town in South Carolina. I grew up in.a religious area and my family is all southern baptist. I was in the praise band in the youth group at my church and was the lead singer. I knew that with singing and music, I could somehow escape this caged life I was living at home. I always felt a bit different from my peers and even my family. I really couldn’t be my full self when I was younger, due to it being the Bible Belt and me being gay was a no-no. As I graduated high school, I moved to Orlando, FL and started really living my life as a gay man, Nothing felt more freeing than knowing people weren’t really judging me on my sexuality…. at least the friends I was making there, it was like nothing I had ever experienced. I was always into music and wanted to do something with the talent that I had. So, I had a lot of fun in Orlando and realized, I was never going to work on music and be successful without focusing on what I needed to focus on, myself. I loved to go out dancing haha and I maybe went to the club too much, so I decided to move back home and get grounded again. Opportunities came up and it took me to Detroit, MI. That was an experience! haha and then I moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2018. I own my own business now and now success means something a little different from when I first wanted to be famous and be a singer haha, I realized that I needed to make money and music wasn’t paying the bills. Once I was successful with my business, I was able to start making music on my own and self-releasing. Success to me is my free time and being able to live here in LA and enjoy life and work on music whenever I want in a really awesome studio. My upbringing really showed me how to treat people and just that southern charm that you don’t always see in LA haha. It has lead me to work with a lot of successful people and businesses. Always stay in true with who you are and where you come from.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer/songwriter producer based here in Los Angeles. I started working with my friend, John, during covid. And John is a savant, he truly is very talented and someone that I trust all of my music with. We have worked together now for about 4 years and have created over 250 demos. Some of those songs I.end up self-releasing and the others are just there just in case…lol SOMEONE maybe one day will buy my catalog 🙂 I write, sing, and help produce all of my music. The biggest thing for me is finding reach. I would love to share my music with a bigger audience and I also would love to be performing. MANIFESTING IT NOW! hehe. I’ve been putting myself out there more and more recently after my 10 year relationship ended back in January. But don’t be sad for me, we all go through ups and downs in this temporary life, what we do with the situation is what really shows our true colors. I joined the gym and have been living my best life, the break up was the best thing to happen to me. I’ve been through a ton of downs but always try to remain positive. AND never hold grudges, again this life is temporary, do what you love and love what you do!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

the Huntington library is a really awesome place where some cool movies were filmed and very outdoorsy DEF taking them to Quarters KBBQ in K -town for dinner

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My good buddy and producer Christian (28mm), he really is a good soul and someone that is truly caring for others and makes amazing music. We have a song coming out together called, “Gone.” That hopefully will be out soon 🙂
