We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Logan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I’ve been in the music industry for the past 15+ years, being a session guitarist, songwriter, touring musician, producer and faithfully serving as Music Director at 3 great churches in Los Angeles,CA, NYC,NY and now in Austin, TX. I’ve been on 2 Grammy-winning records in the Gospel/Christian music industry and played on countless records.
The one thing that people don’t probably realize is that the pay scale can be utter trash…and that’s mostly for local work. Typical wages in Austin over the past 10 years have risen significantly over that period…upwards of $10,000+/year on average…the catering, venue, restaurant, AVL industries have mostly scaled with it….however, most venues and clubs want to pay the same price what they paid 10 years ago for musicians and artists….it’s embarrassing and very discouraging and you’re hustling literally all the time! So yeah, help get better pay scale for musicians please!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I currently work for a tech company that’s the leading forerunner in our sector, Multitracks.com, as a Music Producer for products. Never in a million years did I ever think that my passion for music would lead me towards tech, but I absolutely love it! And prior to that, I had spent almost 2 decades working for churches and non-profits, helping people in need and creating musical experiences for 10,000+ people week after week, building teams including the next generation and all the while trying to raise a family.
As far as getting to where I am today, I credit that to a few things. First, the goodness of God! He has blessed me immeasurably and deserves the first and most credit! Second, trial by fire! Being able to tour with the top gospel artists for the past decade has seriously stretched me as a musician and, as challenging as it was, it shaped me to who I am today! I learned dynamics, chord re-harmonization, a whole new level of improvisation…
And also, I didn’t always weather the storms in life with grace and ease. There were plenty of obstacles, job opportunities, difficult bosses and goals I had set that I failed at achieving…by the grace of God I’m on the other side of it, stronger and more resilient, but also more compassionate and caring!
I started a non-proft earlier this year, Musician On Mission, with he goal of helping musicians that feel overwhelmed, to find a place of hope and community so that they can move forward in their calling, empowered and encouraged!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I’ve been in Austin, TX the past 10 years, so I’ll give a rundown of the best case scenarios:
Breakfast can only be complete with coffee and breakfast tacos in the ATX…so we would head over to Merit Coffee or Houdstooth Coffee and then be posted up at VeraCruz All Natural for the best MIGAS in the whole world!
Next we would be off to Zilker park to hang out and see the sights right across from the city, before the heat starts getting too crazy. Then while we’re south of the river in the city, hit up SoCo (South Congress Ave) for some shopping at unique and weird local shops.
As a musician, naturally we would have to go to Austin Vintage Guitars!
All that shopping demands a decent…this is where Texas BBQ would shine. Brisket, smoke turkey and jalapeno cheddar sausage with sweet tea….I would head off to Stiles Switch BBQ (home of the famous Matthew McConaughey scene)
After that, off to the Domain for more cool spots to shop and hangout. And then maybe even go across the street to TopGolf to get in some casual golf fun.
After all that golfing craziness, make the best of the the great food that Austin food scene has to offer some more….there are so many choices, but my 3 favorite float between Ramen Tatsuya (best ramen in a 100 mile radius) or Comedor (upscale Mexican with the absolute best drinks in the city) or Uchi-ko Sushi!
After that, if we’re still not wiped, it’s off to the Cidercade Arcade/CiderBar on Riverside to end the night playing vintage arcade games with a city skyline view!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my friend, brother and mentor Brad Alden! He helped me in such a unique and soul-searching time in my life; where it would have been easier to call it quits in music to just take care of my young family. Instead of that, he let me and small family of 4 (at the time) move in to his for basically nothing, taught me how to be a better business man and has become a life-long brother in my life! He’s a legend and I’m grateful to God to have him in my life! Love you bro!
