Meet Tyris Winter | Poet & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyris Winter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyris, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I think there is a risk in everything. I also think when something feels a little daunting, that it’s a signal for further growth. In my life i’ve taken many risks and I’ve learned something from every leap of faith good or bad. There is no growth conceived in confinement.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I got to where I am through trial an error. Through leaving situations that stifled me. By believing in my skills and never stopping. It wasn’t easy and I don’t wish it was. I couldn’t imagine if i was talented AND had everything handed to me lol. The struggle was definitely character development and I’m still evolving. What I want the world to know about me and what I create, is that i’m the child that survived and grew up to make cool shit lol
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have so many places but my must sees are definitely start the day with a cute coffee from velo, then head to the Broad, lunch at zinque then dinner at this pizza place called Grá they’re soooo good!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In my story i’ve had to seek out family/ community. I honestly have to thank the teachers that i had throughout my life that have believed in me. Specifically Jean Johnson and Dana Engen, who not only advocated for me, but advocated that I never shy way from my artist self.
