Meet Ural Garrett | Journalist, Content Curator, Social Media Manager and Storyteller

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ural Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ural, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Ural Garrett is an Inglewood native and graduate of Southern University And A&M College. For over a decade, the content curator and social media strategist has worked alongside various brands and outlets, including Complex, BET, IGN, The Hollywood Reporter, Oculus, Trigger Mix Reality, TechRadar, CNN, and more. Creating content-based around music culture and technology over a decade, Ural is currently co-host of The Lyric Lounge with Tosha, Teal & Ural on Tavis Smiley-owned radio station KBLA 1580 AM.
I grew up in a single-parent household as my dad died when I was around seven or eight years old. Growing up in the 90s, my mother had me in the house to shield me from stuff like gang violence. This is where my love of art and technology comes from. I’ve used that appreciation to build a solid career around myself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that I’ve not only written about the intersection of art and technology for various outlets including CNN, IGN, MTVNews, BET, The Hollywood Reporter, TechRadar and more. Meanwhile, I’ve worked with various brands and non-profits ranging from Oculus to Know Your Rights Camp.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in the city include Leimert Park where there’s so much culture and food. It’s also where KBLA 1580AM is located which is the only Black owned talk-radio station West of The Mississippi. I also love Downtown Inglewood for the same reasons for spots ranging from The Hilltop to Martin’s Cocina y Cantina. I’m also a BBQ lover so Phillps, Ribnest and Kenny’s BBQ are my favorite spots. Then there’s my love of gaming which leads some of my favorite spots like Family Arcade, 8-Bit Circus and X-Lanes.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my sister Erica Holmes, Brother Vincent Holmes, Brother-In-Law Alphonso Graves, Partner Rya Thomas, Nephew Jace Floyd and fantastic daughter Ruby Garrett. They’ve all helped shaped the person I’ve grown to become. R.I.P. my mother Mary Holmes.
