We had the good fortune of connecting with Uriah Gold and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Uriah, what inspires you?
For me, Inspiration can come from lots of things like a color, a conversation, an object, or my own insecurities and experiences. Anytime I write a song I usually start off with a simple melody that will be the hook. From there its just about figuring out what I want the story to be and how I can relate to it. With my first song “Strawberry” the inspiration for the melody came from an a 90’s rap song titled “Ridin Low” that sampled the temptation’s song “My Girl”. I wanted the song to be simple and catchy since it was my first one, so I based the story around a guy who is nervous about being with a girl he likes. I figured it was a story that everyone could relate too and It was something that I have had some experience with. To help myself get more inspired and invested with my song’s story I use various imagery and try to envision a setting. For example, with “Strawberry” I pictured a Private Highschool/College setting so I would put of pictures of various school campuses and uniforms on my laptop while I was writing. Colors and patterns also help with my process so with “Strawberry” I felt the story as black and white with deep red accents.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think I have improved a lot with my music this past year and im beggining to find my signature sound. I would say im most proud of how much work i’ve put into my songwriting skills. For the first half of this year I was doing online school and had the opportunity to work with multiple instructors one-on-one which really helped change my approach to songwriting. Like I’ve said in a previous interview, it’s taken me a long time to be confident with my music and to be my authentic self. I find the more I practice and develop my craft the more I feel grounded and not so focused on what everybody else is thinking. It makes so excited for next year because I have so much content that I can utilize that I know people would love to hear. My next song will be titled “Like a King”, and im really excited for it. I have a pretty amazing team helping me out with this song and can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on ! It’s also crazy to think that five years ago no one knew that I wanted to take this path of music so badly. If my younger self saw me now I can’t imagine how schocked he would be. The kid who would sing quietly in his room so no one could hear him was suddenly singing live with gold hair vulnerable to critiscism. So for people who are too scared to be themselves, just go for it and don’t waste your time trying to please other people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I spend most of my time on Hollywood Boulevard since my school is located there. My favorite place to eat at or study is PokiNometry in Hollywood and Highland mall. The workers there are super friendly and the food is amazing, overall its just a great little place where I can get some work done. A special place for me that I haven’t actually been to in awhile is the hawaiian restaurant “Dukes Malibu” which is just off the Pacific Coast Highway right next to the ocean. Dukes was a restruant that my family would only go to for special occasions. My whole life I have loved Hawaiin culture and anything related to the ocean so that restruant is a place that gives me instant happiness.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that I have to thank for helping me be the person I am today. I am lucky enough to have a huge support system that I am always able to fall back on whenever I feel like im not good enough or I can’t do something. It’s awesome that I have friends who are so talented that are always availble to help me put with a project or a question I might have. I have to give a huge shoutout to Katsuya and Studo 81 for being an amazing friend and mentor to me. He worked with me on my first two projects it was a life changing experience. I also have to thank all of my friends and family who saw me struggle and still supported me and my music. More than anyone I owe my happiness and success to my parents who have helped me so much financially and with my mental health during these last few years. Thank you to everybody who has ever been there for me !
