We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Danna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valerie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before I started my business, I noticed there were many female leaders often lack confidence or clarity when they communicate, particularly in times of transition or growth.
They needed a thought partner when they are ready to rise to the executive level of a corporation, launch their dream business or expand their established company.
What and how to communicate to your intended audience in a way that they understand what you mean, is a problem I solved for entrepreneurs, professional athletes and high-profile executives throughout my career. I know what it takes to help leaders communicate effectively.
In 2022, I launched Banks Danna, a strategic communications firm specializing in effective leadership communications. I help leaders, primarily women, create and share powerful, authentic stories. Your story, when told well, can change how you are seen in work and life overall.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a former senior executive, my journey through the corporate world fuels my passion for guiding others to communicate effectively.
Finding your voice and determining when and what to share is incredibly difficult for many people. In my experience, this is one of the ongoing struggles we face regardless of gender.
People are not taken seriously nor are effective when they lack the skills to convey what they intend. Meaning, if we are not convicted and clear about what we want to say, we lose our audience. If we are too convicted (passionate or emotional), we cause our audience to shut down. So, how do you effectively connect yourself with the people you want to influence? And do it in a way that is in tune with a company’s culture, industry standards or overall vibe. Ultimately creating a relationship of trust.
It’s tough. I’ve done it really well. And I’ve failed too. Both personally and professionally.
Through my previous and ongoing learnings, I guide my clients to success seeking to understand where they are and what they need to communicate differently to get them to their next business milestone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It depends on which friend, so here are the highlights that are top of mind:
You must start with the beach. Put your toes in the sand in Santa Monica.
Venture up to the 3rd street & Promenade, shop a bit and grab a bite to eat.
Exercise in the warm sun each day with a walk or run along the beach.
Head to West Hollywood and Beverly Hills for the shopping scene – if you have kids or want a great market vibe head to the The Grove.
Sports fan? Grab tickets to a Lakers or Sparks game, a Dodger Dog while watching baseball or cheer on the UCLA/USC football teams. All depends on the season.
Want a more laid back vibe? Head to Malibu to grab the freshest of juices at SunLife Organics.
Must-see museum: The Getty.
Places to stay and play: Avalon Beverly Hills – avocado toast by the pool and walk to Rodeo Drive.
Ritz Carlton Marina Del Rey – Drinks on the patio, you’ll never know who you’ll see!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
