We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Hirsch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valerie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I wholeheartedly believe that any success I have in my life is the result of a group effort. When it comes to Voyager, my team, the designers, and the customers and community around the shop, have all been supporting and advancing the business since day one. I don’t see any success as mine, but ours. I may be self-employed and privileged enough to be in a position to create the vision, but that work would not be possible alone. I think making the decision to listen and learn from everyone, and to value my team as equals, is what has contributed the most to our success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a small business right now is not easy, but we’re making it work. We decided to continue to make decisions from our heart, and we looked at the business as part of a community with a conscience, rather than just a business with a singular goal to profit. To us, success looks like being able to donate to causes and organizations that help our community; success looks like finding more sustainable practices & forming friendships with our customers. I think that’s something we’re most proud about, and it allows us to move forward regardless of a fluctuating economy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’re staying in as much as possible during this pandemic, so it would be a bit different than before. We’d order take out from Manuela, Hippo & Kismet, go on hikes in Griffith & Runyon, and probably rent a spot in Joshua Tree for a quick getaway.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Voyager team of angels.
