We had the good fortune of connecting with Van Kao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Van, what makes you happy? Why?
What makes me happy is being able to create something meaningful and seeing the impact it leaves, even if it’s just giving someone a moment of joy, feels really good. I love being a creative and the whole process of visualizing, filming, and getting into the zone while editing the pieces together to bring your vision to life is very fulfilling.

When I create content, whether it’s to make someone laugh, reflect, or feel inspired, it’s a lot like cooking for someone. You pour yourself into it, hoping they enjoy it, and when they do, that sense of connection and satisfaction makes it all worth it.

This is also the reason why I’m so drawn to wedding content creation. A wedding day is filled with raw, unfiltered emotions—joy, love, excitement, even a few happy tears—and it presents so many opportunities to capture moments that are both impactful and unforgettable. There’s something really special about documenting those emotions and turning them into memories people can relive forever.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I currently work at Apple as a post producer for the Vision Pro, part of the immersive post-production team. Our goal is to create compelling content that transports viewers into new destinations and experiences, making them feel like they’re truly part of the moment. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a team at the forefront of immersive technology, where storytelling and cutting-edge innovation come together.

Since this is a brand-new medium—we’re navigating uncharted territory, which has made the work both exciting and extremely challenging. Being involved in these early phases hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly fulfilling. The steep learning curve pushed me to grow quickly in ways I never expected, and this role has prepared me both professionally and personally. I feel extremely fortunate to have gained so much knowledge, and even more so to be surrounded by a team of really smart, passionate, and supportive people who make the challenges worthwhile.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was in town, I would first take her to Kato, a Michelin star Taiwanese-American restaurant led by chef Jon Yao, located in the ROW in DTLA. The reason why is because my fiancé is a bartender there, and before he even worked there, we dined together at Kato as a Christmas present for him. The food was amazing and we both fell in love with the food and people.

He also has quite a few connections just being in the industry in which he has shown me so many great restaurants and bars that I would love to take my best friend to experience as well. Then we would go to a Korean spa in K-Town to get pampered and a Tibetan massage place in SGV to get the knots untangled in our bodies.

I’d also take her to the Pasadena Ice Rink with me because I love ice skating and the place has quite the history to it as well. It’d be a full week of eating, drinking, and getting pampered.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge thank you to my niece, who has been the driving force behind my journey into content creation. We are ten years apart and basically grew up together, sharing the same childhood. We were labeled as the Tom and Jerry of the house, dynamic duo, and Shrek and donkey. It all started back in 2020 with one silly TikTok video we made together, just for fun. Neither of us expected it to blow up the way it did, but that one moment sparked everything. Seeing how people connected with something so simple—and reading comments about how we made their day just by being ourselves—felt incredibly special. Creating unscripted, raw content that showed us exactly as we are, unfiltered, made me realize there’s real power in authenticity.

From there, we kept going, having fun, and finding joy not only in making others laugh but also in sharing little pieces of who we are. I kept my 9-to-5 job throughout all of this to show her—and remind myself—that you can still pursue what you love as long as you handle your responsibilities. I wanted to be someone she could look up to, paving a path she could follow and learn from. But along the way, she became my inspiration. Her creativity, humor, and fearlessness reminded me why I love this process, and because of her, I had the courage to dive fully into this space. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her, and everything I do now is with the hope that she feels inspired to create her own path, just like we did together.
