We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, what principle do you value most?
Wow, it’s challenging to choose just one! The values that matter most are: respect, compassion, authenticity, and boldness. I believe as humans, having respect for one another – our collective individualism, our life, and the earth are the most fundamental baselines to abide by. By using our energy to give hope and spread kindness, this allows room for compassion, in turn, allows us to go a step further than just respecting others!
When I first embarked on this candle making journey, the first question I asked myself was, “how can I spread compassion and awareness by giving light in the most authentic and sustainable way?” Sustainability is the smallest act of kindness that we can give back to our planet, Mother Earth. #AwakenYourScents — it’s a call to awaken all of your senses with your olfactory receptors to allow the mind, body, and spirit to enter a state of deep awareness and relaxation.
So you’re probably wondering, why did you decide to call it ‘The Violet Effect’? It stems from The Butterfly Effect concept of chaos theory, which states (in Layman’s terms) that “a small change can make greater changes happen — one small incident can have a big impact on the future.”
My name “Vanessa” actually means butterfly and the process of metamorphosis. Naturally, I believe that the process of transformation isn’t limited to just butterflies, it occurs within each and every one of us, so I decided to coin my own theory that states: “When
Nonetheless, if all of that isn’t your cup of tea or of any interest, at the very least, my candles are able to take people on a clean, subtle, yet empowering, olfactory adventure, with a product that smells luxurious, all the while, being completely sustainable!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I tell people about how I got into health coaching, I always start with saying that I truly believe that my career found me. I am where I am today professionally because of my consistency and determination to walk in my passion and have a career that brings me ultimate joy. I’m most proud of recently becoming board certified with the National Board of Health & Wellness Coaches and a trained doula, consequently, excited for the future of health coaching and doula services being integrated into healthcare systems globally!
I do not believe that anything that is worth having is necessarily easy, however, because I am fervent about health and wellness, my career does come with ease and allows me to enter the ‘flow state’ effortlessly. The most important lesson that I have learned along the way both professionally and personally is that it is essential to set healthy, realistic boundaries with others and myself. While I am always up for new opportunities, I’ve learned that my intuition is my North Star and if I don’t feel something is valuable or beneficial to me, it probably won’t work out. I want the world to know, I am immensely passionate about health, wellness, and healing for the BIPOC community and our allies to ignite social change! I genuinely just want to support the healing process as best as I possibly can.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person who deserves all the credit and recognition in my journey would be my Godfather, Jimmy. He has been the most influential, yet grounding force from the day I was born. He showed me how to be bold and to stand in my truth, unapologetically, by
As a first generation Haitian-American, growing up, I soon learned the most ideal, acceptable careers, simply did not include entrepreneurship as an option. My Godfather Jimmy showed me that I can do whatever lights up my soul and that being multi-passionate doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but me! If you would have asked me 10 years ago, if I would ever be an entrepreneur, I would have never even imagined that I would be a small business owner, let alone have the support and encouragement from all of my family! Of course, I also have to give a shoutout to my tribe! My support system embodies balance; they motivate me to be the best version of myself and keep me humble and grounded in moments where I need it the most.
