We had the good fortune of connecting with Velma Sellars and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Velma, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started going through a self awakening back in 2018. I started reading and praying a lot more. My relationship with God got stronger. I was reading about rich African history. The two together woke me out of a sleep I can’t describe. You will know when it happens to you. I wanted to share the feeling of knowing who you are. There is a bigger picture and you are more than capable to live up to it. I wanted to make clothes that had small messages on them to remind you. And look good doing it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want my art to be a walking affirmation. Comfortable and cute. Look cute running errands and at happy hour. All while affirming yourself and whoever else reads it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Gary, Indiana. GI. Well thanks to my friend, Deana Johnson, we have the hashtag #thingstodoingary. In the summer you can go up to the lake front. We have a black owned restaurant at Marquette Beach called Beach Buds. If you’re vegan/vegetarian or just like good healthy food. Please go to Vibrations Juice bar in the Miller neighborhood. It’s black owned too. Then for a nightcap we have a black owned wine bar called Dialogue. They have books that you can sit and read as you sip your wine. Sometimes they have a DJ 👌🏾. Very much grown and sexy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If you are a black woman buy Sacred Woman. Even if you don’t read it at first. Flip through. Look at pictures. Ease your way into it, and I can possibly change your life. But I give all credit to God.
