We had the good fortune of connecting with Vicky Cai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vicky, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Everyone starts their own business for a reason, and for me, it’s about pursuing my dream of owning a little art shop. Every day, I see people on magazines or social media working hard to do what they love. If they can do it, then so can I.

I realized it was time to stop admiring others’ lives and start building the life I envision for myself. A fulfilling life doesn’t just fall into place—it’s created, and for me, that journey begins with building my own business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I used to work as a designer for education and tech companies, and the design skills I gained there have been incredibly helpful in running my small business. However, my first year in business only resulted in a $310 profit. Despite putting in countless hours handling everything myself, I still couldn’t make significant progress. I was constantly worried about wasting money on new investments, focusing too much on earning money and proving to others that I could succeed. The truth was, I spent a lot of time on things I wasn’t familiar with, and it wasn’t as worthwhile as I hoped. From this experience, I’ve learned an important lesson: I’m not a superwoman. I need to trust the right people to handle the right tasks. Although I couldn’t afford to hire a full-time employee, I realized I could find other resources to help me. A one-person business isn’t truly just one person; it’s about using available resources to transform that one person into a team.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll take my friends to the Getty Museum and the Getty Villa to admire beautiful art, and then head to Griffith Observatory for one of the best city views in the world. I’ll also take them to Old Town Pasadena and the Jackalope Arts & Crafts Market to explore local artists’ works. One of my favorite places in Pasadena is Boiling Crab, where I can enjoy Taiwanese stinky pot. I’ll also introduce them to Urth Caffe, the perfect spot for brunch.

I’ll definitely invite my friends to my hometown, Glendora. There’s a fantastic Mexican restaurant there called Ramon’s Tacos y Tapas, which serves the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. Another must-try in Glendora is Donut Man, and I’ll grab coffee with them from Tro Coffee, located on Route 66.

The Huntington Library in Arcadia is another hidden gem in LA County, and I’ll make sure to bring my friends to 3 Cat, a great boba milk tea shop in the Santa Anita Mall.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m very grateful for the small shop in Taiwan where I bought my first needle felting kit during my trip in 2019. This encounter opened up a whole new artistic world for me. Although I was already an art student, I had never found a medium that felt truly mine. When I discovered needle felting, I felt that I had found my artistic voice. I loved how unique this art form was, and it felt perfect for me. I enjoyed working with the warm, soft materials. This experience also inspired me to later start my own business.
