We had the good fortune of connecting with Victamone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Victamone, how do you think about risk?
I like to think about risk as opportunity and growth. When we are open to taking risks, we allow ourselves to dive into the unknown which can lead us to more paths of new experiences. I think of life as a forward moving motion, and with risk, whether the outcome is defined by us as good or bad, life keeps moving forward as we continue to grow by planting these seeds of risk. Being a DJ requires risk taking to constantly evolve and to stay relevant. Whether it be learning a new mixing skill, or starting a new project, or connecting with someone new, risk has to be taken in order to keep the energy moving and I love to keep things moving.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Been a B-boy since day one with my crew The Illaskan Assassins. I started my DJ journey spinning for the dance events we would host back in Anchorage, AK throughout the 2000’s. These events helped me develop my foundation as a DJ. I’ve always been a collector of music and as my library continued to grow over the years, so did my experience as a DJ. I’ve become well versed in the various styles of dance music especially in my favorites like funk, breaks, house, and club. I love the kind of spaces where this type of music lives and being involved as much as I can with it however I can. I’ve always gravitated towards what resonates with me whether it be good music, good people, or creative projects, I still continue to try to find the good in everything. The only real challenges I’ve had throughout my career as a DJ was resisting change. Now I just embrace change whenever the opportunity comes. Some highlights of my career would be when I’ve shared stages with artists such as; The People Under The Stairs, Shock G, and P-Lo to name a few. In 2010 I toured internationally as part of a cultural envoy mission with The Global Block Foundation and the U.S Embassy on the PUSHH campaign tour in Nepal. In 2018 I moved from Alaska to California to start a new chapter of this journey and that turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. The move between states fueled my passion for music culture even more as I’m now closer to many artists and creatives that share the same vibe as me. One thing the world should know about me as a DJ is my eclectic taste in music that transcends genres. With my background in Hip Hop and love for the dance community, I always know how to bring the right vibe.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely visit my favorite sushi spot in LA called Mrs. Fish to start. On a Wednesday let’s head over to China town to General’s Lee to check out the homies at Living Room Sessions. On a Friday we would go catch a scratch session at the Beat Junkies Institute of Sound in Glendale. Then towards the weekend we would stop by Echo Park and go to the Shortstop for some drinks. If that’s on a Saturday we would say what’s up to the homies at the Fourplay party that they host there. Probably head back to China town to the Grand Starr Jazz Club for the iconic BoomboxLA party. In a perfect world all my favorite party’s would happen on the same weekend, so on Sunday we would stop by Realones and SoulSourceLA. To end any of the nights off right we would head over to Avenue 26 for some tacos. Yea

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my family first, to my Mother Vicki, older brother Lex, and wife Sasha for always supporting me throughout all my adventures. Shoutout to my ILLaskan Assassins Crew, my B-boy brothers for life who helped me develop a good foundation with music and dance. Shoutout to all my people in the music scene who I’ve rocked with and who continue to rock with me.
