Meet Victor Wei | Physical Therapist, Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist, Board-Certified Sports Clinical Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Victor Wei and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victor, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Alhambra, CA, and then moved to Arcadia, CA in the 3rd grade. I was fortunate to be raised in the San Gabriel Valley to get an appreciation of what it is like to grow up in a melting-pot of ethnicities. I think that allows me to better understand that there are so many differences in cultures, and that it is vitally important to try to learn from people about their own individual experiences. These connections being developed are so important for community, personal development, and for being able to make individuals feel comfortable with the care they are receiving. One of my favorite topics to talk with clients about is what their favorite dishes or food recommendations are.
My parents both immigrated to the US in their young 20’s. My dad went to BYU and my mom went to USC for their master’s degrees, and they eventually were fortunate enough to earn their citizenships here. A wild story to show where I get some of my work ethic from: my mom went back to her master’s program 1 week after she delivered my brother into this world. Meanwhile, my dad was working full time and taking care of a newborn child since they didn’t have the finances to pay for babysitting. It’s amazing the life that they have created for our family, and I wouldn’t be where I am if not for the upbringing they provided me. Besides being there all the time for me, they also provided the financial stability to allow me to attend Pepperdine University, MGH Institute of Health Professions, and also USC sports residency. Their example paved the way for me to be humble yet determined in the pursuit of my career goals. They created such great examples for me of what you can really build with hard-work and a well-thought out direction that you’re pulling in.

What should our readers know about your business?
My goals for starting Wei To Move Physical Therapy generally came down to how I could better serve clients, and how I could do it in a way that benefited both my clients and myself.
For the client, the goal was to remove some of the barriers that may exist for physical therapy especially in an insurance-based model. I offer concierge physical therapy services in which you can have physical therapy provided within your own home or the setting of your choosing. This helps to reduce the burdens of time and travel constraints for the client, and to also allow the client to work within the setting that they are most comfortable in. It allows me to really hone in on an individually tailored, one-on-one program based on what the client has available to them, and to see how they interact and exist within their own daily environment. This treatment model also allows the client to have more autonomy and decision making power in their care plan as it removes the limitations and ability for insurances to dictate the plan of care. Furthermore, removing insurance billing allows for clean, transparent pricing, so that clients aren’t constantly confused about how much they were billed and receiving that bill months down the line.
For me personally, I wanted to be able to treat clients the way I wanted to without those limitations imposed by insurance companies. It’s been refreshing to be able to provide a different model of care that exists outside of that traditional insurance-model. This has afforded me an increased level of flexibility with my schedule, a change of pace, and the opportunity to begin learning what it’s like to run a business. Communication is also easier because of the increased level of transparency in which I can provide better details about the why related to all of the decisions made or questions the client has.
I would definitely not call starting up a business easy. One of the more challenging aspects of the business was becoming the first formal physical therapist to provide PT services directly on campus for California State University, Dominguez Hills. Similar to that unique opportunity, creating a business is constantly learning about things that need to be done such as all the formal paperwork to file, gradually building referral sources or points of contact, building a website, and just making all the daily decisions that come with starting a business that you just don’t anticipate. All my peers told me to expect that, and it still catches you off guard when you’re the one going through it. I think that a lot of getting through the early days is trying to stay organized, prioritizing what needs to get done, and setting up deadlines for when you will get tasks done to hold yourself accountable.
For the Wei To Move brand, I hope that it can be synonymous in the area with excellent care driven from a genuine passion to help clients achieve the physical goals that they seek. Wei To Move aims to provide treatments rooted in integrity and accountability to the client, and we are appreciative of the trust that client’s place in us to get them back to the physical activities that are so very important to them. I see it as not only an opportunity, but rather a mission during each and every treatment session to empower the client to work together towards a successful outcome. My goal is to focus on making the most out of every treatment session with such intent that the brand will speak for itself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Eat: If there’s a group of people coming go to Sun Nong Dan and get the Galbi Jjim. For the taco cart experience you can’t go wrong with Brother’s Cousins Taco. I love going to Glendale to get the combination of food from Porto’s Bakery and Cafe and then sticking around to get dinner at Raffi’s Place. For some Chinese food you can get dim sum at Hong Kong Dim Sum, Tang Gong, or a whole lot of other places in the San Gabriel Valley. Mama Lu’s is a reliable dumpling house. Bavel is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. One of the benefits of Los Angeles is there are endless sources for good food.
Hang out: Check out Venice Beach to check out the unique scene at the boardwalk, hike in the San Gabriel or Santa Monica mountains, go to enjoy some of the great cocktail bars like Laurel Hardware and Bar Flores.
Finally, while you’re here try to go check out any sports game that LA has to offer. All the stadiums have a great atmosphere to go watch a good game between the Dodger Stadium, Crypto.com Arena, Intuit Dome, the Colliseum, Rose Bowl, BMO Stadium, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents, Wen and De Qin, first and foremost. I wouldn’t have any chance to be where I’m at today without their hard work, love, encouragement, and ability to provide for me throughout my life.
My brother, Chris, for advancing my growth to try to keep up with him.
My Fiancé, Gabby, and my dog, Rosie, for always showing me unconditional love and support. They’re the best people to come home to everyday, and a good daily reminder of how much easier life and hard work is when you have the right community around you.
