We had the good fortune of connecting with Vildan Starr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vildan, what principle do you value most?
Authenticity and originality stand at the core of both my personal and professional life. These values resonate deeply with me, stemming from my diverse background and the artistic path I’ve navigated. In my art, I strive for authenticity by allowing each piece to be a truthful expression of my emotions and perspectives at the moment of creation. My abstract works are not pre-planned but evolve intuitively on the canvas, embodying originality in every stroke and color choice. This approach is not only a reflection of my personal artistic philosophy but also an invitation to viewers to engage deeply and personally with the artwork, discovering their interpretations and emotional responses. For me, authentic art is not just about creating something new; it’s about being true to oneself and resonating this truth in a way that connects universally.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My artistic practice is distinguished by its emotionally resonant and visually captivating abstract expressionist style. I aim to evoke the intangible feelings and moods of life through bold colors and dynamic compositions, offering viewers a moment of reflection and personal connection. What I am most proud about regarding my art is that it is my own unique artistic expression and does not imitate or emulate any other specific artists or style. My style is my own. The journey here wasn’t easy; balancing a legal career with artistic aspirations required focus, discipline and passion. There were moments of doubt and challenge, but my dedication to my craft and the joy I find in artistic creation kept me motivated and inspired me to move forward..
Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of persistence and the value of continuous learning. Every workshop and class has added layers of depth to my work and understanding of art and deepened my creativity. Now, I’m most excited about the evolution of my style and the deeper emotional narratives my recent works explore. I want the world to recognize the sincerity and vibrancy of my art, and I hope to inspire others with the same spirit of perseverance and love for creativity that drives me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
During a week-long visit to New York City, I’d showcase its cultural richness by blending museum visits with vibrant neighborhood explorations. We’d start at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, followed by lunch at the Central Park Boathouse and strolling around Central Park. Another day would include the Guggenheim Museum paired with a stroll along Madison Avenue and its boutiques and art galleries. On another day we would go Downtown and visit the Whitney Museum, followed by lunch in the Chelsea Market and a walk on the High Line. If my visitor wanted to explore New York’s art scene further, then we would check out the galleries in Chelsea, Tribeca, and Soho, appreciating each neighborhood’s unique artistic offerings. Evenings would be spent enjoying New York’s iconic cultural scene: a Broadway play, a jazz show in the Village, and a concert at Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall. New York offers tremendous culinary options to choose from for each evenings’ meal. This trip plan would combine visual and performing arts for a truly unforgettable New York experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey has been deeply influenced by numerous mentors and supporters along the way. Foremost, I owe immense gratitude to my family for their unwavering belief in my dual career path in art and law. Their support has been the cornerstone of my resilience and success. In the realm of art, I have been fortunate to study under some remarkable mentors. Anna Patalano, at the Greenwich Art Society School of Visual Art, not only refined my technique but also encouraged me to explore the emotional depths of abstract expressionism. Additionally, the Creative Visionary Program with Nicholas Wilton was pivotal, as it pushed the boundaries of my creative expression, teaching me to synthesize various artistic elements into a cohesive vision. These experiences under such mentorship have been invaluable, shaping not only my artistic style but also my philosophical approach to creating art.
