We had the good fortune of connecting with Walter Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Walter, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Consistency. And a bit of blind belief (laughs).

I’ve been working in entertainment for about fourteen years now. It began with teaching myself the process of the cinematic art form while working on independent films, which were written, produced and directed by me. From this, the idea of creating a production company came to fruition. On March 10th, 2009 – Verloren Production was born. Originally Verloren was designed as a site to showcase photography work. In time, we expanded into other Medias. Working alongside aspiring filmmakers, musicians, writers, actors and other artists. We strive to help all artists achieve their creative objectives.

With Verloren Productions we have developed and produced fifteen short films. Our most renowned productions include: “Here in the East” (2016) which brought us numerous honors, including awards at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards, Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival and the Chicano International Film Festival for Directing and Best Film. “Into the Night” (2019) was adapted from a story by Stephen King. The film received acclaimed and various festival award nominations. In 2021, the film qualified for consideration in the 93rd Academy Awards, under the Best Live Action Short Film Category.

When a new project looms on the horizon, I like to look back at where it started and why I continue to do this. It’s a beautiful balance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been fortunate to be able to do what I love. It’s been a rewarding experience to learn from many people and then make this knowledge my own by demonstrating who I am as a filmmaker. The same goes for the productions I’ve developed with Verloren. I approach each new production as the first – with the same wonder and excitement. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy. And I think that’s been the fun part of it all.

During the summer of 2020, we shot our next film “Norjack”. The stakes were high as usual, only this time we had a pandemic on top of everything. I don’t think anyone on the crew had ever been confronted with such circumstances. Yet, how quick we adapted to the shooting schedule and regulations was amazing. I’m excited to complete the film and share it with audiences.

In regards to the lessons learned along the way, well I’m still learning. Taking it step by step and putting in the work. I’m happy to be part of different film affiliated groups and develop new material, which has been brewing inside for some time. In our radar we have the films “East Side Story”, “Vice Ride” and “Macho!”. Stay tuned, there is definitely more coming your way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s plenty to do in the Los Angeles area. I like to ask about what they would be interested in doing. Planning something out for someone seems a little rude for my taste. haha

But yeah, I would definitely start a conversation pertaining to what they would like to see in the area. From there, we can make a list of places & activities, and plan things out. That way there’s no misunderstandings.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson; “I am a part of all that I have met”. My mother taught me to be patient, to always put in my best effort in all I do. My sisters are my pride and joy.

There are several people in my life, past and present, which have inspired and encouraged me along the way. My first film mentor Hugo Pallete, who showed me the ropes on a production set. To all the staff and professors at LACC, AAU, UCLA, USC and CSULA. To all the filmmakers I’ve met along the way.

Warner Bros. the first major studio that opened its doors to me.

So many shoutouts. The best I could do is reach out and pay it forward.
