We had the good fortune of connecting with Wynter May and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wynter, what do you attribute your success to?
This is a tough question because success means many different things to different people. To me and my brand, Wynter May Designs, success is being able to accomplish the goals that I had set my brand! The most important factor behind my success is simple, putting in the work and never giving up. I first started my business when I graduated high school in 2016 where I faced a lot of challenges. Ranging all from going to college, having a daughter, working full time jobs and just life itself. Sometimes the pressure of these challenges would have me questioning myself on if this was what I was meant to do. But like I said I NEVER gave up. I knew that I was gifted this talent for a reason and knew that the work I was constantly putting in was going to pay off! and it has! Just in these past few years I have been gifted the opportunity to showcase Wynter May Designs at NYFW in 2020 and other high end fashion shows. Ive also had the opportunity to be in magazine spreads, design for local celebrities, and mentor other inspiring designers who love my work and look up to me. I have exceeded many of the goals that I had set for my business and I find myself having to create bigger and better goals every year. Im extremely blessed and the blessings just seem to just keep coming! So here I am, standing proof that no matter what the circumstances may be never give up on your dreams! Never giving up will bring you success as it has for me.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Honestly what sets me apart from others is ME. Theres only one Wynter May in the world and I’m the one person who represents the esthetic of my brand, Wynter May Designs. My business alone is unique because I am a fashion designer who hand makes 1 of 1 custom clothing. Everything I make is thoroughly sketched out, designed, and sewn personally by me. One thing I stand by and is extremely proud of is my quality of work. I specialize in bridal, prom gowns, maternity gowns, and women’s special occasion wear. I amaze myself everyday by the pieces I create with my own two hands. I mean it’s still astounding to me that people believe in my designs so much that they travel from all over the US so that I can make them something special. It’s truly amazing. Hands down it wasn’t easy at all to get to where I’m at now. As I mentioned in one of the other questions I faced Many challenges to get where I am today. In fact one of the things I didn’t mention is how being a Michigan resident there isn’t much of a fashion/creative presence here like there is in many other states. The city of Detroit alone has so much undiscovered creative talent. The city is slowly but surely rebuilding and I am hoping that we can once more have an impact in the world but with more emphasis on its fashionable, artistic, creative residents and I hope that I can help make that impact!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely have to take them to Downtown Detroit! Thats what I call the soul of the state of Michigan. Yeah you have Lansing which is the capitol but if you want to be in the presence of history, Downtown Detroit is where you want to be. Detroit was once known for its great industrial presence in world. Not only is It known for housing the top car brands in the United States, aka the big three, Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors, it also used to house the historical J.L. Hudson building which was a 32 floor department store. Currently Downtown has been rebuilding itself over the years with more local owned bars, clubs and restaurants. Its turning into a mini New York in my eyes, and I love New York! Taking a walk downtown you will never get bored and will always find something to do!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would most importantly like to thank my mom, Marie May. She has been my number one supporter from the beginning of it all. Since a little girl I have always wanted to be a fashion designer and she made sure I never gave up that dream. From taking me to my first sewing class at 11, from buying me my first sewing machine, and even being there and helping me during my biggest accomplish yet, NYFW. She’s always been there behind the scenes supporting and making sure that her daughter followed her dream! Secondly my other biggest supporter, my daughter Anastasia. She promotes me any and everywhere! It doesn’t matter If were in the checkout line at the grocery store, she going to tell them “my moms a fashion designer, she makes dresses! Give them your card mommy!”. There are plenty of others also such as my close friends and family. They all know who they are, and I just appreciate everyone in my life who has ever believed in me.
