Meet Xian Ang | Creative Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Xian Ang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xian, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always been interested in zine-making, books, and art merchandise. What began as a bedroom hobby of doing illustration and paper crafts, has transitioned into an interest that has left an impression on my friends. I started out by sharing my work in the form of small merchandise, with new people I meet. These serve as quirky gifts, not in their medium per se, but in their form and design combined. As time went along, many encouraged me to start a brand of my own, something that’s always been a natural transition for my creative journey.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work primarily with a monochrome color scheme in a bold illustration style. I’ve had professional ups and downs, but it is much better, mainly due to the support I’m blessed by from my friends and family. I’m the type of designer who prefers focusing solely on the creative, which is in itself, a double-edged sword. Navigating the logistics and aspects of making it “work”, is not something that was easy for me. For me, I see it as having to be an idealist and a pragmatist at the same time when constructing ideas. Occasionally, fun projects are still being done as a form of R&D and to keep my passion ignited.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Coming from NYC and Singapore, and being from cities that never sleep, I’ve realized that there are always things to do any time of the day or night. But my preferred choice of what’s fun and favorite would be determined by the company and less by places. Though, I’ve always made it a point to check out a local art bookstore and a museum as my staples.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has been a constant pillar of support in my pursuit of the arts. There was no guarantee that I’d turn it into anything of profit or recognition. Yet, they saw the joy it brought to me and recognized the potential I had for making this work.
