We had the good fortune of connecting with Xiaoxue Meng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xiaoxue, what principle do you value most?
The principle that resonates with me most is the value of taking risks. It’s been the driving force behind my academic and professional journey. Initially, I pursued a chemistry major at a liberal arts college but soon realized my true passion lay in the arts. Taking a leap of faith, I transferred to the School of Visual Arts in New York.
Continuing to challenge myself, I delved into animation at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. Despite uncertainties and fears, I persisted. Through these bold choices, I honed my skills and created meaningful work. This willingness to embrace risk culminated in the honor of having my short film selected for the Tribeca Film Festival.
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve learned that taking risks fosters personal growth and opens doors to unforeseen opportunities. It continues to shape my approach to life, reminding me of the value in stepping outside of what’s familiar. Embracing risk has enriched my experiences and helped me discover my true passions and capabilities.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hi there! I’m Xiaoxue Meng, a recent Animation and Digital Arts graduate from the University of Southern California.
Originally from a small city in China, I didn’t have much exposure to animation and art. Initially studying Chemistry at Rhodes College, I found myself drawn to storytelling rather than scientific experiments. Transitioning to the School of Visual Arts, I immersed myself in Design and Motion Graphics, exploring animation extensively.
During my time at USC, I completed my thesis project titled “Restless is the Night,” which celebrates the concept of “girls helping girls” and female solidarity within a challenging patriarchal society. My work also explores comedy and horror genres, reflecting my belief that animation offers endless possibilities for addressing diverse topics.
Now, I’m working as a motion designer at a design studio, balancing exciting projects with my personal creative pursuits.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently reside in a quaint, small city, where the main attractions revolve around nature. Visitors can enjoy exploring the lush forest trails and picturesque gorge paths nearby. A delightful brunch at a local downtown restaurant followed by a leisurely stroll to one of the nearby waterfalls would make for a charming morning. In the afternoon, spending time by the serene lake, observing the various bird species, would offer a peaceful retreat. As evening approaches, I would love to treat my guests to dinner at my favorite Chinese restaurant in town. I hope they find the simplicity and natural beauty of our city enjoyable.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to express my gratitude to my classmates at USC, with whom I shared a remarkable journey. There were 14 of us who entered USC at the same time, and together, we navigated through our studies and endured the challenges brought on by the pandemic. Throughout this shared experience, we not only supported one another but also learned and grew together.
In particular, I want to acknowledge my best friend and classmate, Yuehan, who played a significant role in shaping my journey in animation. Her work inspired me from the moment I entered USC, and she continued to influence and guide me with her expertise and creative insights. As the co-director of our thesis film, Yuehan collaborated closely with me, imparting invaluable skills and helping to expand my creative horizons.
It is through the camaraderie and support of Yuehan and our talented group of friends that I have evolved into the person I am today. Even as we embark on our respective career paths, we continue to uplift and encourage each other, serving as a source of inspiration and motivation.
