We had the good fortune of connecting with Xinyu Zheng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Xinyu, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I took a long term rest after my last collection. I started building my brand very randomly. I just felt I have some interesting ideas I want to bring out.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I own a brand named ‘Tulip’ in New York. I am trying to use “Found Object” into my designs to create a realistic and natural aesthetic. I would say Tulip is about object, handmade, stories and human. This is a new brand just established in 2023. I’m also looking forward to where the brand will end up and what the reaction will be. Everything is starting from 0 at the moment. It’s the first time I’ve tried to do a very formal ready-to-wear collection, using a lot of interesting fabrics and materials, and making a lot of new attempts. The brand will finally launch at New York Fashion Week in February, so I hope you can look forward to it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would recommend them to walk around 10th St & 5th Ave. I really like to walk around the city and check out those apartments or houses by the side of the streets. People really decorated them super pretty. You can find out very New York like houses side by the streets with very delicate design.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my tribute to my parents who played a crucial role in nurturing my passion for fashion and art. I grew up in a fashion-forward family and my parents instilled in me a love of 80s, 90s and 00s Chinese fashion. My mom’s love of vintage, bold and unique styles, and my dad’s love of antiques and storytelling are a source of inspiration for me.

In addition, my parents co-owned a sequin company, which exposed me to the intricacies of the fashion industry from a young age. Their work with various manufacturers and independent fashion designers provided me with hands-on experience in the design process. They actively involved me in the curatorial planning of exhibitions and commissioned me to do the overall design, fostering my creativity and passion for the fashion industry.Their belief in the future prospects of clothing and their unwavering support during the learning process made the complex process of searching for and making clothing materials less daunting for me. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities they provided and encouraged me to explore different avenues in the field of art and design.
