We had the good fortune of connecting with Yangzom Gama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yangzom, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think of risk-taking as essential to growth, both personally and creatively. At the beginning of my design journey, I often worried about making mistakes or falling short of expectations. Gradually, I realized that embracing uncertainty, experimentation, and even the occasional failure is crucial in developing my creative voice. This shift allowed me to explore beyond familiar boundaries, experiment boldly with different mediums and methods, and ultimately shaped my identity as a designer. Becoming comfortable with taking risks has not only enriched my work but has also made me more resilient and open-minded in both my career and life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work combines bold experimentation with personal storytelling—I often use vibrant colors, expressive typography, and diverse printing methods to express ideas inspired by my memories, cultural experiences, emotional connections, and careful observations of everyday life. The path to finding my creative voice wasn’t always smooth; I initially struggled with the fear of making mistakes. However, by persistently doing what I genuinely love, I’ve learned the importance of embracing uncertainty and taking creative risks. Stepping beyond my comfort zone and allowing myself room to experiment—and even fail—has been essential in helping my work evolve, grow, and resonate more deeply.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I’m not sure—but if my best friend came to visit, I’d probably start by taking them to some local spots you can’t find anywhere else. We’d explore cute and unique stores, hunt for hidden gems at vintage shops and flea markets, and enjoy great meals at some of my favorite restaurants. And of course, we’d spend plenty of time relaxing at the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the ocean. For me, the best trips are always about good food, discovering interesting things, and plenty of sunshine.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my family, my partner, and my mentors who’ve deeply influenced my creative journey. My family taught me to appreciate beauty, nature, and culture from an early age, inspiring much of my design aesthetic and passion. I’m also especially grateful for my professors, who encouraged me to embrace experimentation, step out of my comfort zone, and explore design fearlessly. Their support and patience helped me realize that creativity comes alive when you let go of the fear of making mistakes. Without their guidance and constant encouragement, I wouldn’t be the designer I am today.
