We had the good fortune of connecting with Yash Bhatnagar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yash, what are you inspired by?
The light we see in our environment, from dusk to dawn, has always inspired me. When I began my journey as a photographer, the interplay of light was a profound source of inspiration, enabling me to perceive the world uniquely. My innate need to translate the world I see in my head to the world around me is the reason why I do what I do. As my career transitioned from photography as a hobby to professional cinematography, my visual style evolved significantly. I draw heavily from the classic technique of chiaroscuro found in historical paintings. This method, characterized by its bold contrasts between light and dark, deepened my fascination with the visual arts and continues to influence my work profoundly.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey has been anything but traditional. I did my undergraduate studies in computer engineering, but my love for photography and film eventually culminated in a passion for cinematography, which I decided to pursue professionally. This transition felt a little intimidating at the beginning, but the more I delve deeper into this profession, the happier I feel about my decision. I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Film Production from Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, to become a Director of Photography. So far, my journey at Dodge has been an exciting one. I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects with unique stories and visual styles that have allowed me to try out new things and learn a lot in the process. I am grateful for all the collaborations I have had and the people who have enabled me to improve my craft.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
During my time in Orange County, I’ve found myself drawn to the non-touristy spots, particularly Crystal Cove Beach, which has become a personal favorite. Away from the city hustle, this beach offers an authentic California experience with its breezy atmosphere. Additionally, I have a bias for the Queen Mary ship in Long Beach. The city’s preservation of its history captivates me, and visiting the Queen Mary felt like a journey through time, immersing me in its rich legacy. These spots provide authenticity and allow me to spend quality time with friends. Here, free from the monotony of city life, we engage in meaningful conversations about what truly matters.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge shoutout to all my fellow filmmakers and cinematographers who inspire me every day. Your creativity, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence push me to keep striving for better. I deeply admire the hard work and passion that goes into every frame you capture, and every story you tell. It’s not just about the end product, but the countless hours of planning, shooting, and editing that make this profession so challenging and rewarding. Thank you for being a constant source of inspiration and for reminding me why we do what we do.
