We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya Dilan Akdağ and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanya Dilan, how do you define success?
Success has different forms in every society but in my opinion it must be more personal for longterm happiness. Indeed we live in a community. Despite every norms; greed for money or achievement of a high position won’t make your motivation last for long time ’til you want more and more. So, first of all success should make you happy by realize oneself. If you find a spark that leads you towards the life steps and make this road enjoyable, inspirable then it’s a big succes. Then you can follow this spark or talent or joy and find a way to express yourself. I know it seems so easy to talk but it’s the most difficult thing to resist to norm-flow and let free your own flow in this very ocean. So, suces is being bold about following your own spark and flow and expressing oneself by producing. That’s how you can realize yourself and every other dreams.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Now, I’m working in an architectural office located in Ankara, Turkey. Recently I made a restaurant bar named The Lounge Atakule from A to Z entirely. It was such a great time to design and then build it, feels like if I dream I can make real. And it’s true, making a place that you designed in this world feels so divine. Also I am an freelance art director. Using skills in an different area makes person thinks different and acts different. Eventually the work become unique. In addition I make some geometrical concrete designs and attend fairs. First, I design in 3dmax and then make real. I’d always wanted to be an architect but in business life it can be different, so first I started in business life as a new architect I get so dissapointed because it was all about money and profit. I get fired 4 times. Then I learned the balance between creative and analitic mind. I nourish myself with these creative acts. I made my own brand TDARTELIER. Now it is only about concrete designs but I have bigger idfeas about it. I’d like to build an installation for my city and for people who will interact with it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I was born in Ankara and studied in İstanbul and now I turned back to Ankara to work. So I feel like both of this city fels like home. Ankara and istanbul are so different though. I feel more safe and familiar in Ankara but in İstanbul it is wild and thrilling, also surprising and beautiful. So if you will come to Ankara for a week, you should know that I will take you to İstanbul at least for weekend. In Ankara at the capital of the country, we will be visiting the Ankara castle first, it’s an old place and feels nostalgic. Then we could go to Tunalı and walk the street and have some drink. If we have time we could go to Eymir lake to watch the sunset. In İstanbul we could visit Galata tower and see the Bosphorus and Golden Horn at the same time. It’s a very eclectic place, you feel both alien and at home same time. There’s so many places to go visit in Istanbul but we must choose. That’s why I choose Rumeli after Galata. Rumeli is a big place at the coast of Rumeli you feel so free and strong. So, come here. I will be waiting.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all I’m here in my life thanks to my family and my dear friends. At my every hesitate point they were always stand by me. I’ve had also some troubles with my mental health at some point and I got over it by dint of them. Also, there are a few proffessors at İstanbul Bilgi University who enlarged my vision and I would like to follow their path. I want to dedicate my shoutout to these people who hold my hand no matter what, no matter where.
