We had the good fortune of connecting with Yazmine Verdieu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yazmine, how do you think about risk?
I am going to use this part to talk to my readers:

Taking risks in my life has always brought the best outcome, indeed. Taking a risk gave me a one-way ticket to freedom. Now I understand that it could be scary to take risks. The doubtful thoughts, fears, and anxiety come because it is something you are supposed to do. The fear of failure is just a blockage. If you have to take a risk to get what is meant for only you, you will not fail. The stronger the fear, the most likely you are meant to do it. All you need is consistency and faith, no matter the size. Taking risks will lead you to the best seasons of your life! In your “risky season,” please stay close to God. Make sure that your spirit stays strong and practice self-awareness. These are the methods I practice as I take risks.
Verdieu Learning Center was the most significant risk I have ever taken in my life, and through that risk, I had to be in the right state of mind to have some “stability” in my business. Now I am not comfortable with my risk either. Every day feels risky, and every day feels uncomfortable being an entrepreneur. It is unbelievably dangerous owning a business during a pandemic, and knowing this is what keeps me going because there is nowhere else I should be besides where I am currently. I have to keep taking risks to reach my “end goals.” My “end goals” aren’t even my “end goals” because by the time I complete my “end goals,” I have a list of newer goals. All come from taking risks. Lastly, in my terms, taking risks means doing the unordinary. Taking risks means doing what your immediate circle would not do. You have to take risks and be uncomfortable to get to where you want to be and set your next generation at a different level. The risks you take can build your legacy!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Starting. That is what I am most proud of. I am proud of starting Verdieu Learning Center. You know, there is so much self-doubt and down talk that we tell ourselves, which hinders us from most of our goals. This was so terrifying to start, honestly. Knowing that I am a first-generation business owner, I assumed that the likelihood of succeeding was slimmer than those I compared myself to. I’m just glad I put that all to the side and gave it a go!
I held myself accountable in the areas I knew I lacked in and asked for help/advice from those who were more insightful. I am grateful that certain situations occurred in the beginning phase. I also understood to have a successful business, and I had to build the infrastructure of my business as well. That consisted of many hours of researching and learning concepts and models I would never have thought of! Every mistake was a lesson I have applied in this process as well.
Since my business centers around children, I must be patient and aware that the pandemic and virtual courses have strenuously affected them. Self-awareness and empathy are essential as well. I understood that I had to be a well-rounded individual to assist my student’s ability to be resilient and adapt to situations and lessons in their classroom.
To the world: I built this from the ground up; it started as a “cute little side hustle,” and now I was able to quit my job to do this full time! I had no idea I’d get here. I was not thinking this far two years ago. It warms my heart that my students and parents see and respect how passionate I am about Verdieu Learning Center.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in the city! I love to shop, so I would take her to Nordstrom’s at Century City, Fairfax District (The Grove), or South Coast Plaza. I would also take my best friend to Sabrak boutique, either in Slauson or Manchester, to buy her an outfit for dinner. Prior, I would take her to Slauson or Del Amo Swap Meet on the way to buy her a gold chain and a nameplate because who doesn’t have one in LA? Nameplates are an unassigned nametag. For brunch, we can choose from The Coffee Company, Court Cafe, Kai’s Table, Fixins, The Ivy, Harriet’s Rooftop, Mastro’s Ocean Club, Frida’s, Javier’s (Newport Beach), and much more because I am a prepared best friend that has a list.
One night we could go bowling at L. A Live Lucky Strike for drinks, and after, we can go to Sunset hookah lounge to continue the vibes.
I would also plan dinner at Fogo de Chao or Le Petit Paris to enjoy, and after, we can talk all night over cocktails at Perch LA.
For one day, preferably during the week, I’d take my friend to wine tasting in Temecula. I’m sure she would love Avensole Winery!
Now for an evening/ night of turn-up, I love a day party vibe! Day Party L. A managed by DJ Wizzkidd never lets me down, and if my best friend wants to continue to party, we can go to Fins and Feathers in Marina Del Rey or The District by GS. Both District by GS and Fins and Feathers are black-owned and give a black west coast vibe like no other bar/restaurant I have been to.
Of course, I would take my best friend to the beach, and my favorite beach to chill at is Manhattan Beach. I can order some light food from Simply Wholesome for us, and we’ll head there right after pick up.
Besides the beach vibes, I’d want us to sit poolside at a hotel like The Shay or The Marina Del Rey Hotel. We can order drinks and appetizers and take pictures. I would want my best friend to “feel” the vacation vibe Los Angeles has to offer.
I feel that you will meet interesting people everywhere in Los Angeles, especially if you have an exciting aura! You attract who is meant for you.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I give all of my glory and honor to God. Without God, none of this would be possible. God listens and answers your prayers. Second, I’d love to thank myself! It’s a continuous battle I have with myself that I feel like I am now winning!
I would love to thank my friendtor, Chelsea Ritchie, for setting the unbelievable goals I have accomplished so early. I’d love to thank Hadley Rose, my best friend, for jumping into the deep end with me!
I would love to thank all of my friends as well!
I’d love to thank my students for believing in me more than I believe in myself at times! I would love to thank their parents for trusting me, who 75% are primarily business owners!
Lastly, I would love to thank those who instilled the doubt in me and weren’t on my side. You guys are my fuel! Thanks! (inserts kiss emoji)
